Ward Lamphear, 94, of 74 Center St., died at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday (Nov. 11, 2003) in Heritage Green Health Care Center. He was born Nov. 25, 1909, in Centralia, the son of Ernest and Maude Frank Lamphear. Prior to his retirement, he was employed by Bemus Point Central School System as a custodian and by the New York State Fish Hatchery in Bemus Point. He was a member of Bemus Point United Methodist Church, exempt member of the Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Department, founding member of the Ellery Hunting Camp and a former member of Ellery Senior Citizens. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He is survived by a daughter, Barbara Aiken of Bemus Point; a son, Thomas Lamphear of Bemus Point; five grandchildren: Daniel Aiken of Newburgh, Ind., Donald Aiken of Niobe. Rebecca Armeli of Celoron, Susan Carlton of Fredonia, and Sandra Lamphear of Buffalo; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, the former Elizabeth Davidson, who died in 1964; his second wife, the former Isabel Underwood, who died in 1995; two brothers: Frank and Mervin Lamphear; and a sister, Louise Bohall. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel G. McBride, pastor of Bemus Point United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery. Friends will be received one hour prior to the service in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Bemus Point United Methodist Church; the Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Department; or Bemus Point Library.

Ward Lamphear. Mrs. Lamphear was born Nov. 6, 1908, in Dunkirk, the daughter of Thomas and Bessie Pomeroy Davidson. She had been an employee of the Bemus Point Post Office for many years. She was a member of the Methodist Church, the official board of the church, and was a charter member of the Bemus Point Firemen’s Auxiliary. Besides her husband, she is survived by one son,

Thomas Lamphear, and one daughter, Mrs. Fred Aiken, Bemus Point; one brother, James Davidson, Dunkirk; two sisters: Mrs. Thomas Douglas, Dunkirk; and Mrs. Albert Luderman, Lancaster; and five grandchildren. Lamphear, 82, of 74 Center St., Bemus Point, died at 7 a.m. Monday (March 6, 1995) in her home. She was the wife of Ward Lamphear, whom she married June 13, 1967. A native of Bemus Point, she was born Dec. 24, 1912, the daughter of William and Ella Shoemaker Underwood. Prior to Mrs. Lamphear’s retirement in 1970s, she was secretary to the superintendent of Bemus Point Central School System where she was employed for 32 years. She was a member of the Bemus Point United Methodist Church where she helped with the church newsletter and was a member of Ellery Senior Citizens and the Chautauqua County School’s Secretarial Association. She was a graduate of the Bemus Point High School and Jamestown Business College. Surviving besides her husband, are a stepson, Thomas Lamphear; a stepdaughter, Barbara Aiken, both of Bemus Point; five step-grandchildren: Dan Aiken, Evansville, Ind., Don Aiken, Niobe, Rebecca Armeli, Celoron, Sue Carlton and Sandra Norton, both of Fredonia: 11 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandson; and a sister, Marian Barkstrom, Bemus Pont. PJ: 3/30/1933: Ernest W. Lamphear died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Louise L. Bohall at Bemus Point last night at 6:50 o’clock, aged 60 years. Besides the daughter at whose home he died, Mr. Lamphear is survived by his wife, Mrs. Maude Lamphear of Bemus Point, and four grandchildren. The funeral will be held Sunday at 3 o’clock at the home of Mrs. Bohall. PJ: 4/3/1933: The funeral of Ernest Lamphear was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jay Bohall, where he had resided with his daughter for the past six months, at 3 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Emerson H. She was the widow of Ernest W. Lamphear, who died almost 30 years ago. She was born in Meadville, Pa., Sept. 20, 1879, the daughter of Clark and Harriet F. Skinner Frank. She had made her home in the Town of Ellery for the past 60 years. Mrs. Lamphear had been an active member of the former Rebekah Lodge of Bemus Point; the Golden Rule Club; and was a past president of the Ellery Senior Citizens. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Jay Bohall (Louise), two sons, Marvin Lamphear and Ward Lamphear, all of Bemus Point; five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Lamphear, 65, of 28 Main St., Bemus Point, a former chief of the Bemus Point Fire Department and a former trustee of the Bemus Point Village Board, died unexpectedly at 7 p.m. Sunday, (Jan. 15, 1967), at Jamestown General Hospital. Mr. Lamphear was an interior decorator and painter. He was born June 8, 1901, at Bemus Point, the son of Ernest and Maude Frank Lamphear. An exempt member of the Bemus Point Fire Dept., he had served as chief for 16 years. He was a former deputy county fire coordinator; a member of the County Fire Chiefs Association; and a life member of the Southwestern Volunteer Firemens Association. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Flora May Lamphear; one sister, Mrs. James Bohall; two brothers, Mervin Lamphear and Ward Lamphear; his mother, Mrs. Maude F. Lamphear, all of Bemus Point; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Evans Funeral Home. The Rev. Lamphear, died in the Jamestown General Hospital t 8:30 a.m. Wednesday (Feb. 1, 1961). Mrs. Lamphear who had been ill for about a year was removed to the hospital at 2:41 a.m. Wednesday by the Emergency Squad of the Bemus Point Fire Department. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, the Study Club and the Home Bureau and the Firemen’s Auxiliary of Bemus Point. Mrs. Lamphear was a confirmand of the Immanuel Lutheran Church. The daughter of Fred J. and Jennie Seagren Swanson, she was born Nov. 26, 1902 in Windber, Pa. Besides her husband, she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Arthur Bentley and Mrs. Oden Wilson, both of Jamestown. Funeral services will be held in the Evans Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Saturday. Rev. Charles Aldrich, pastor of the Hurlbut Memorial Church at Chautauqua will officiate. Interment will be in the Bemus Point Cemetery.... PJ: 3/26/1969: Mervin H. Lamphear, 70, of Oriental Avenue, Bemus Point, died at WCA Hospital at 2:30 a.m. today (March 26, 1969). Mr. Lamphear had been custodian of the Bemus Point Central School prior to his retirement. He was born in Cattaraugus County, April 18, 1898, the son of Ernest and Maude Frank Lamphear. He was a member of the Moose Club, Jamestown; and was an exempt fireman of the Bemus Point Volunteer Fire Dept. Surviving are a son, James M. Lamphear; a daughter, Mrs. Dixie Zochowski; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Mrs. James Bohall; and a brother, Ward Lamphear, all of Bemus Point. PJ: 1/ /1968: Bemus Point: Mrs. Beatrice Anderson Lamphear, 69, of Oriental Avenue, died at her home at 4:45 p.m. Wednesday (Jan. 3, 1968). She was born Feb. 18, 1898, in Jamestown a daughter of John Emil and Hilder Anderson. Mrs. Lamphear was a member of the Immanual Lutheran Church in Jamestown; the Bemus Point Home Bureau and the Bemus Point Study Club. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Dixie Lynn Lamphear; a son, James Lamphear, and two grandchildren, all of Bemus Point; and a brother, C. Harry Anderson, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. PJ: Sept. 11, 1942: Richard H. Lamphear, 20, Bemus Point, died at the Buffalo General Hospital this morning at 2:30. He is survived by his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Lamphear of Bemus Pont, one brother, James, his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Maude Lamphear, and his maternal grandfather, John E. Anderson of Jamestown. The body is at the Haskin & Evans Funeral Home at Bemus Point, where it will be until 12 noon Sunday when it will be taken to the Methodist Church for the funeral at 2 p.m.

July 15, 1948 - Ruth Hugham. PJ: 1/29/1990: Maple Springs: Roy M. Landis, 65, of Maple Springs, died at 5:34 a.m. Saturday (Jan. 27, 1990) in WCA Hospital. He was born Feb. 3, 1923 in Arnold Pa., a son of the late Earl M. and Millie E. Kerr Landis. Landis was employed by Aluminum Company of America in New Kensington, Pa. He retired in 1970 and moved to Maple Springs. He was a graduate of Arnold High School, class of 1943, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Ira Lou Spring Post 149 American Legion and AARP. Surviving are his wife, Ruth Hughan Landis, whom he married July 16, 1948; a daughter, Susan Casper of Maple Springs; a granddaughter, Stacey Casper of Maple Springs; and two sisters: Ruth Reissner of New Kensington and Jean Landis of Jamestown. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Mabel Landis. The funeral was at 1 p.m. today in Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Daniel G. Langebartel, David Ralph. b. Sept. 4, 1957 Jamestown, NY. d. Aug. 24, 1980 following a motorcycle accident early the previous day. bd. Aug. 27, 1980 Lot 436 G - 6. Age 22. s/o Ralph W. & Anna (Niblock) Langebartel. PJ: Aug. 1980: Bemus Point: David R. Langebartel, 22, of 20 Maple St., Bemus Point, died at 9:45 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 24, 1980) in WCA Hospital. Langebartel was hospitalized following a motorcycle accident early Saturday morning. Langebartel had been employed at Ring Division of Producto Machine Company. A lifelong Bemus Point resident, he was born in Jamestown, Sept. 4, 1957, a son of Ralph W. and Anna Niblock Langebartel. He was a 1975 graduate of the Hewes Occupational Center, Ashville. He attended Maple Grove High School. Besides his parents, he is survived by two brothers, John and Paul, and a sister Kathie Langebartel of Bemus Point. PJ: 8/15/1980: A Bemus Point man died Sunday night of injuries suffered in a two-motorcycle collision early Saturday on Lakeside Drive. David L. Langebartel, 22, Maple Street, was pronounced dead at WCA Hospital by Corner Daniel Russo. An autopsy was scheduled for this morning to determine the cause of death. The deceased was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by Rodney J. Bottomley, 22, Weaver Road, Maple Springs. Bottomley was reported in satisfactory condition this morning at WCA Hospital with leg and shoulder injuries. The driver of the other motorcycle, Dana A. Johnson, 22, RD 1, Bemus Point, was also reported in satisfactory condition at WCA with lacerations to his face and legs. The two motorcycles were south bound on Lakeside Drive, at 4:24 a.m Saturday when the front of Johnson’s vehicle collided with the rear of Bottomley’s vehicle. Both bikes crashed to the pavement and slid off the north side of the highway.

Age 82. s/o Ralph E. & May Frieda (Kreeb) Langebartel. md. Mar. 30, 1946 Anna Niblock. PJ: 2/20/2001: Mr. Langebartel was a Jamestown area resident since 1948. He was a 1936 graduate of Olney High School, Olney, Pa., a 1953 graduate of the State College at Oswego with a bachelor of science degree in industrial art education and earned his masters in education from the University of Buffalo. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army as a forward observer in the 90th Division, Battery B, 241st Field Artillery Battalion in the European Theatre. He was awarded the Purple Heart, Silver Star, Air Metal and Cluster to the Air Metal. His outstanding bravery under fire and devotion to duty aided materially in the attack and helped make possible the successful assault on Fort Koenigsmacher. He was employed as an industrial arts teacher at the former Bemus Point High School and Maple Grove Junior and Senior High School from 1954 to 1978, retiring due to illness. He served on the lake patrol for the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department and in earlier years was a catcher on the Wentz-Olney semi-professional baseball player in North Philadelphia. He was a member of the Ellery Memorial Post 947 American Legion, Bemus Point. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and skilled craftsman. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and golf. He is survived by his wife, Anna Niblock Langebartel, whom he married in March 1946; two sons, Paul Langebartel of Maple Springs and John Langebartel of Bemus Point; a daughter Kathie Regan of Bemus Point; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris Archibald of Rio Grande, N.J.; and a brother, E. She was born Nov. 13, 1920, in Kenmore, NY, the daughter of William and Elizabeth Lewis Niblock. She was the widow of Ralph W. Langebartel, whom she married March 30, 1946, and who died Feb. 19, 2001. She was a 1938 graduate of Kenmore High School, a 1943 graduate of Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, and attended SUNY Oswego. She was a combat nurse in the U.S. Army during World War II from Jan. 15, 1944 to April 1, 1946, earning the rank of 1st Lt. She was stationed in Verdun and France. She was a registered nurse at Buffalo Children’s Hospital, where she was a newborn charge nurse and was employed by WCA Hospital from 1965 to 1970. She was instrumental in bringing neonatal units to the WCA Hospital maternity unit. She was a member of Bemus Point United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School. She was past chairman of the Chautauqua Chapter March of Dimes, a volunteer for various non-profit organizations and coordinated door-to-door campaigns. She was an avid gardener and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by a daughter, Kathie Regan of Bemus Point; two sons: Paul W. Langebartel of Maple springs and John E. Langebartel of Bemus Point; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Eleanor Horton of Canandaigua and Margaret Reed of East Aurora. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, David R. Langebartel, who died Aug. 24, 1980; three sisters, Jean and Mary Niblock and Elizabeth Benson; and a brother, John Niblock. PJ: 6/ /1961: Mrs. Minded Rogers, 64, of 16 Ellis Avenue, prominent in civic affairs here for many years, was stricken and died at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, (June 15, 1961) in the Veterans of Foreign Wars clubhouse on East Second Street. Mrs. Rogerson had been the speaker at a 35th anniversary program of the John W. Tiffany Post Auxiliary. The first aid squad of the fire department was called and a physician pronounced her dead. A certificate of death due to natural causes was issued by Coroner Frederick L. Hitchcock. The widow of Henry E. Rogerson, who died last December, she was born in Townville, Pa., Oct. 13,1896, a daughter of John M. and Flora Drake Lawson. Mrs. Rogerson had moved to Jamestown 16 years ago from Ellery where she had resided for a number of years. She had been employed by the J.C. Penny Co. for 18 years. Mrs. Rogerson attended the Westminister Presbyterian Church and was a member of its choir and Circle I. She was a member of the Sunset Rebekah Lodge 508 I.O.O.F. of Bemus Point and had served as past deputy president for District No. 1. Mrs. Rogerson was also a past officer of the Chautauqua County Guild of the Odd Fellows Lockport Home and was a member of the Jamestown Civic Chorus. Surviving are a sister, Florence Lawson of Wauchula, Fla.; three brothers, Noel E. Lawson, also of Wauchula; Carey E. Lawson, Sinclairville and Neal F. Lawson, Twenty-Nine Palms, Calif.; two step-children, Henry Edward G. Rogerson, Jr. and Mrs. James Hedberg (Rachel) both of Jamestown and several nieces and nephews. Services are to be held at 3 p.m., Saturday, in the Lind Funeral Home with Rev. Bernhard M. Johanson, pastor of the Westminister Presbyterian Church, officiating. A lifetime Jamestown area resident, she was born Feb. 9, 1910, in the Town of Ellery, the daughter of Eugene and Gertrude Rhodes Ingerson. She was a 1928 graduate of Bemus Point High School and was employed as a cashier by the Bemus Point High School. She was a member of the Ellery Center Senior Citizens. Surviving are a granddaughter, Linda L. Hartson of Tampa, Fla.; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Florence Murdock; and a brother, Marion Ingerson, both of Bemus Point. She was preceded in death by her husband, John P. Lipsey, whom she married Oct. 14, 1950, and died Aug. 8, 1989; two brothers, Merton and Glenn Ingerson; and a sister, Clara Warner. She was born in Ellery Center, July 25, 1877, the daughter of Dr. John Jordan Lenhart, and Dora Baldwin Lenhart, original owners of the Hotel Lenhart. After the death of her father in 1915, her mother managed the hotel until her death in 1934. Mrs. Johnston had been assisted in managing the hotel in later years by her sons, George A. Johnston and John Lenhart Johnston, both of Bemus Point. Mrs. Johnston, a life-long resident of Bemus Point, was a graduate of Jamestown High School and Collegiate Institute, Class of 1898 and the Hill Piano School in Jamestown. She was a member of the Jamestown Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution; Order of the Eastern Star, Mozart Club, Music Study Club and Browning Society, all of Jamestown; Chautauqua County Society of Artists; American Hotel and Motel Association; New York State Hotel and Motel Association, Inc.; the Universalist Society of Bemus Point; and the Bemus Point Study Club. Besides her two sons, she is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Jane Johnston Pardee, Hendersonville, N.C.; four grandchildren, Mrs. Margaret Hynes, Mrs. Patirck Ricks, John L. Johnston, Jr., and Barbara Jane Johnston, and several great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by the Evans Funeral Home.....Funeral services for Mrs. Charlotte Lenhart Johnston, 90, of 8 Lenhart Ave., will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Evans Funeral Home, Bemus Point. Apr. 29, 1875 at Bemus Point, NY - Sarah Isadora "Dora" B. Baldwin. Dr. Lenhart moved to Ellery Center in 1871 where he practiced medicine. In 1879 he moved to Bemus Point. Dr. Lenhart built the Lenhart Hotel in 1881 which was destroyed by fire in 1891 and rebuilt in 1892.

Mar. 1915: Dr. John Jordan Lenhart, a resident of Bemus Point for 35 years, and one of the most widely and highly respected men in Chautauqua County died at his home in that village Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock, aged 70 years. He was widely known in medical circles, although he retired from  active practice about seven years ago. He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Mrs. George Anson Johnson of Bemus Point; two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Koontz of Ligonier,  Pa., and Mrs. Carrie McDowell of Latrobe, Pa., and two brothers, Noah Lenhart of Johnstown, Pa., and Dr. C. P. Lenhart of Ligonier, Pa. Mr. Lenhart was born in Westmoreland county, Pa., Sept. 10, 1841, and was a graduate of the Cincinnati Medical college and the Buffalo Medical university. In 1871 he moved to Ellery  Center and took up the practice of medicine. Four years later, in 1875, he was married to Miss Dora Baldwin of Bemus Point. In 1879 he moved to Bemus Point  and followed his profession there until about seven years ago when he retired because of advancing age. He had always been actively interested in the affairs of the village and was one of its most prominent business men, being engaged in the hotel business. About 35 years ago he erected a large hotel which was destroyed by fire in 1891. After the fire he erected a still larger hotel building on the site of the one which stands and is the largest building in the village, being known as the Hotel Lenhart.

Lenhart, Sarah Isadora "Dora" B. (Baldwin). b. Sept. 18, 1850 Town of Ellery. d. Apr. 1934 as a result of a fall. bd. Apr. 29, 1934 Lot 270 G - 11. Age 82. d/o Philander & Alcina (Copp) Baldwin. w/o Dr. John Jordan Lenhart. PJ: 4/28/1934: Mrs. Isadora Baldwin Lenhart of Bemus Point died in Miami, Fla., Wednesday evening as the result of injuries sustained in a fall a few days previously. She had been spending the winter in Miami with her daughter and her family. The remains will arrive in Bemus Point this evening, accompanied by Mrs. Johnston. The funeral will be held tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Universalist Church of that place. Mrs. Lenhart was born in the Town of Ellery on September 18, 1850, the daughter of Philander and Alcina Copp Baldwin. On April 29, 1875, she was united in marriage with Dr. J. J. Lenhart, who predeceased her in death March, 1915. To this union was born one daughter, Charlotte Lenhart Johnston. In addition to the daughter, Mrs. Lenhart is survived by three grandchildren: Jane Isadora Johnston, John Lenhart Johnston, and Geroge A. Johnston Jr. She was a member of the Univeraalist Church of Bemus Point, The Library Guild, and was a charter member of the Bemus Point Civic Club (later the Community Club), and was especially active in the earlier civic development of Bemus Point. Mrs. Lenhart had resided in Bemus Point for over 65 years and with her late husband, operated the Hotel Lenhart. Following the doctor’s death, Mrs. Lenhart assumed practically the entire management of the establishment, retaining her alertness and business acumen to the end of her life. Hotel Lenhart was first built in 1881 on the site occupied by the present structure on Lakeside Drive near the ferry, but burned in 1891. It was rebuilt in 1892 and since that time many improvement have been added from year to year, the hostelry being one of the best known on Chautauqua Lake. Mrs. Lenhart had an extended circle of personal friends among the clientele of her hotel, guests returning season after season from Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Buffalo and other cities.

w/ Alice R. Tallman. PJ: 3/23/1953: Edgar Lewis, 87, a life long resident of the Town of Ellery, died at 1:15 a.m. Sunday at the Allen Nursing Home. A dairy farmer most of his life Mr. Lewis was born Feb. 1, 1869. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Robert Elderkin, and two grandchildren, Virginia and Robert Elderkin, Jr. all of Montpelier, Vt. The funeral will be held from the Evans Funeral Home, Bemus Point on Wednesday. Rev. C. H. Hagadorn, pastor of Hurlbut Memorial Church, Chautauqua, will officiate. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery.

G - 2. Age 59. bd. Aug. 17, 1934 Lot 231. w/o M. Edgar Lewis. PJ: Aug. 1934: Mrs. Alice Tallman Lewis, wife of M. Edgar Lewis, died Tuesday night at 9:30 o’clock at her home near Maple Springs, aged 59 years. She was for several years substitute mail carrier on rural routes from the Bemus Point Post Office and well known in the Township of Ellery, where she had resided for 39 years. Besides her husband, Mrs. Lewis is survived by a daughter, Miss Bernice Lewis, at home; and a sister, Mrs. Albert Ball of Stow. The funeral will be held tomorrow (Friday) at 2 o’clock (EST) at the home. Burial will be in the Bemus Point Cemetery.
