A. Rose Davis. PJ: 10/ /1979: Yellow Springs, Ohio: Alton Hale Parker, 92, of 160 Miami Drive, Yellow Springs, Ohio, died at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 24, 1979) in his home. A retired heating engineer, he was born in Jamestown April 9, 1887, the son of Quincy and Mary Francis Hale Parker. He was a U.S. Navy aviator in World War I. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Malcolm Gillespie of Yellow Springs; two grandchildren: a sister, Maude Fornell of Jamestown; and three brothers, Orrin and Charles Parker, both of Jamestown and Carl Parker of Fort Lauderdale, Fla. A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Grace United Church of Christ, Springfield, Ohio. Following cremation, burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery, at the convenience of the family. Jackson Lytle and Coffman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangement.

Parker of Ellery; eight brothers: Alton Parker of Detroit, Ervin Parker of Klamath Falls, Ore., Carl Parker of Buffalo, Earl, Mark M., Claude and Charles Parker of Ellery and Orin Parker of Akron, O.; two sisters, Mary Frances and Maude Sarah Parker of Ellery. Mr. Parker served nearly a year with the 210th Field Artillery in France. He was graduated from the Jamestown High School, class of 1920 and was a member of Ellery Center Baptist Church. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the home at Ellery.

(Feb. 1, 1965) at the home of her grandson, Ellis Parker, R.D. 1, Hanson Road, Gerry. She was the widow of Arthur J. Parker who died in December 1955. She was born in Stockton, May 17, 1879, the daughter of Gustavus and Mary Thompson Austin. She was married to Mr. Parker on Feb. 8, 1899. She was a member of First Methodist Church, Falconer, Moon Brook Rebekah Lodge No. 293, Falconer; she had served as district deputy president of Chautauqua district No. 3 in 1949; and was a past noble grand of Sunnybrook Lodge No. 507 of Frewsburg. Besides her grandson, she is survived by two sons, Norris Parker, Gerry; and Earl Parker, Falconer; and five great grandchildren. ......Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Falconer Funeral Home. Rev. Edwin A. Armitage, pastor of Gerry Methodist Church officiated. Burial was in Bemus Point Cemetery. Bearers were Merle Main, Austin Main, Lawrence Main, Clifford Briggs, Allen Briggs and Guy Taylor. Moon Brook Rebekah Lodge conducted a memorial service at the Funeral Home at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday with Mrs. Hazel Jenson as Noble Grand, Mrs. Maude LaDow as Vice Grand and Mrs. Ruth Nash as Chaplain.

He was one of the pioneer physicians of Chautauqua County. He was proprietor of a large sanitarium located for many years where the WCA Hospital now is in Jamestown. He retired from practice in 1877 because of feeble health. Came to Ellery with parents and commenced to doctor in 1838.

PJ: 5/11/1968: Claude Parker, 68, of 147 Buffalo St., a retired teacher well known to several generations of Washington Junior High School students, died at 7:50 a.m. today (May 11, 1968) at the Fenton Park Nursing Home. Afflicted with polio when 10 years old, Mr. Parker, math and civics teacher at Washington Junior High School overcame the handicap and went on to a teaching career of 37 years. He retired in June, 1959, after 35 years at Washington Junior High School. His first two years in teaching were spent at the old Ellery District No. 7 School, teaching grades one through nine. A graduate of Jamestown High School and Fredonia, Buffalo and Albany Teachers Colleges, Mr. Parker came from a well-known pioneer Chautauqua County family. He was one of 12 children. He was descended from Benjamin Parker, who settled in the Town of Ellery shortly after the Griffith, Bemus and Cheney families. Tracing family history had been one of his chief hobbies along with studying bird lore. A personal friend of Roger Tory Peterson, famed expert on bird life, Mr. Parker organized the Roger Tory Peterson Bird Club and spent four summers with capable students studying birds in Allegany State Park. Although not married, Mr. Parker considered he had many children, boys of the North and East sides of Jamestown, who joined the Lyceum and the Allegany State Park nature camps. During his teaching career, he was secretary of the Jamestown Teachers Association and president of the Jamestown School Park Association, which furthered 100-Acre Lot activities. He also had been faculty adviser for the Washington School Court and Guides and had served as adviser for the Lyceum. He also was a member of the Jamestown Audabon Society; was a life member of the Chautauqua County Historical Society; a member of the Fenton Historical Society; and the National and New York State Retired Teachers Association. Mr. Parker was an active member of First United Methodist Church. Mr. Parker was born April 10, 1900 in the Township of Ellery, the son of Quincy O. and Frankie Hale Parker. He had resided in Jamestown more than 45 years. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. J. Helmer Fornell, Jamestown; five brothers, Charles N. Parker, Fredonia, Orrin H. Parker, Ashville, Earl J. Parker, Ellery and Pompano Beach, Fla. and Alton H. Parker, Sanford, Fla; 23 nieces and nephews; and several cousins. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Christ Chapel of First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Raymond E. Risden will officiate. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery.

Beside the parents he is survived by one brother, Theodore Richard Parker, and one sister Donna Marie Parker. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the home. The interment will be in the Bemus Point Cemetery.

PJ: 3/1/1991: Mr. Parker was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army for four and one-half years. He was a 1941 graduate of Bemus Point High School. He was owner and operator of Parker Fence Company and was a dairy farmer for many years on Dutch Hollow Road. He was a former member of Ellery Center Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dora Faye Parker Churchill. Has sisters: Dortha Mae Parker Lacy of Coco Beach, Fla.; Doris Parker Swanson of Rochester and DeeLoris Parker of Hampton Bay. A Florida and Rochester resident since 1970, Mrs. Parker attended both the Ellery Center Baptist Church and First Baptist Church in Jamestown. Surviving are three daughters: Doris Swanson of Rochester, Dorotha Mae Lacy of Franklin, N.C., and Dee Loris Parker of Hampton Bays, N.Y.; a son, Donald Parker of Jamestown; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and a sister, Henrietta Atwater of Quartz Hill, Calif. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Dora Fae Churchill. A private graveside service will be Saturday in Bemus Point Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Parker was a 1977 graduate of Jamestown High School, and was a member of the Jamestown Unitarian Church. Surviving is his mother of Jamestown; two brothers: Bruce D. Parker of Highland Park, N.J. and Andrew R. Parker, Corapolis, Pa.; and a sister Emily J. Wood of Kingston. He was preceded in death by his father. A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Jamestown Unitarian Church. The Rev. Donald Reidell will officiate. Burial will be in Bemus Point Cemetery. Formerly she owned and operated Parker’s Restaurant, the Greenhurst Drive-in Restaurant and was postmistress for the Greenhurst Post Office for six years. She was also employed by Mary Wyquist Household Sales for many years. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Bemus Point where she was organist for over 40 years, and a former member of the Altar and Rosary Society of the Church. She was a life member of the Fluvanna and Bemus Point Parents Teachers Association, member of the Fluvanna Volunteer Fire Auxiliary and the Ellery Rod and Gun Club. Surviving are a daughter, M. Suzanne Clark of Lakewood; five grandchildren: Jill Coe, John Clark and Patricia Holsinger of Frewsburg, Molly Martin of North Windham, Conn,, and Barbara Clark of Lakewood; five great-grandchildren; a brother, James Rodgers of Bemus Point; two sisters: Isabelle Folkins of Bemus Point and Mary Johnson of Lancaster, Pa. He was a member of the Gracchian Society, and a former president of the society. He was also a member of AARP and the North Harmony Senior Citizens. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Allan Swanson, Jamestown; two sons, T. Richard Parker, Jamestown and Robert H. Parker, Buena Park, Calif.; three granddaughters, Mrs. Samuel Prinzi, Emily Parker, Jamestown and Rolinda Parker, Buena Park, Calif.; six grandsons, Kermit A. Swanson, Eric O. and Andrew R. The couple celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1935. Her husband preceded her in death in May of 1939. Mrs. Parker, a former Ellery resident, was a member of the Ellery Baptist Church and Ellery Grange. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mary White of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Mrs. Helmer Forsell, Jamestown; seven sons, Ervin G. 5/ /2000: Patricia Appleyard Parker, 73, of 1138 Weeks St., died unexpectedly at 9:30 a.m. Monday (May 2, 2000) in Burdette Tomlin Memorial Hospital, Cape May Court House, N. J. She was born Jan. 28, 1927, in Jamestown, the daughter of Donald S. and Ruth Lillian Dearing Appleyard. She was a 1944 graduate of Jamestown High School, a 1948 graduate of Syracuse University and had done graduate work at the University of Nebraska. In earlier years, she had been the assistant editor of "Practical Home Economics" magazine. In 1953, she started at "The Post Journal" as a reporter, and later was a copy editor. She left "The Post Journal" in 1957, and returned in 1971, as copy editor, retiring in 1991. Since retirement she continued to write her weekly column, "After Words". She was a member of the Unitarian Church of Jamestown, the YWCA, Jamestown Audobon Society, Fortnightly and the Fenton Historical Society, where she also served as a member of the board of directors. She enjoyed the study of local history and the time she spent at her lake cottage at Wooglin. Surviving are two sons: Bruce D. Parker of Cape May, N. J., and Andrew R. Parker of Aliquippa, Pa.; a daughter: Emily J. Wood of Kingston, N. Y.; four grandchildren: Kyle and Corrine Parker of Cape May,

N. J., Benjamin of New Brighton, Pa., and David Wood of Kingston, N.J.; two sisters: Nancy Luensman of Mayville and Diana Marsh of New Richmond, Wis., and a brother,

F. Joseph Appleyard of East Petersburg, Pa. She was preceded in death by her husband, T. Richard Parker, whom she married Nov. 10, 1956 in Jamestown, and who died Sept. 11, 1984; and a son, Eric O. Parker, who died Jan. 25, 1994. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in the Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. The Rev. A Jamestown native, he was born July 24, 1951, the son of Harold Penhollow and the late Eleanor Clyde Hannigan. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the U. S. Army from 1969 to 1971, and was employed by Keywell Vac Air in Frewsburg. He was a member of Ira Lou Spring Post 149 American Legion. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and was loved by his aunts, uncles and his many nieces, nephews and cousins. Douglas Penhollow of Tampa, Fla.; a stepbrother, Roman Gedz of Portland, Ore.; and a stepsister, Rosalie Motter of Fort Myers, Fla. Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by a brother, Theodore Penhollow; and his stepmother, Ann Penhollow. the funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday in the Lind funeral Home. PJ: 8/28/1930: The Jamestown Fire Department inhalator failed to save the life of Ernest Penhollow, 17 years old, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Penhollow, who reside near Dewittville, when he drowned at Point Chautauqua at 12:15 o’clock yesterday noon. With several caddies who were employed with him at the Point Chautauqua Golf Course, Penhollow went out on the lake in a rowboat. He dove into the water not far from the steamboat dock, which at that point is only four or five feet deep, and he swam around for a short time before he suddenly sank. The boys attempted to locate him, but James Houston, caddy master at the golf grounds, was successful in finding the body after half an hour. Captain Bernard G. Swanson and Mechanic Charles Harrison of the Fire Department took the inhalator there in answer to a call sent to police headquarters. The two firemen, with Dr. Guy Granger of Mayville and Under Sheriff Ernest A. Gossett, worked over the body for two hours, but they were unable to effect resuscitation......The funeral of Ernest Penhollow was held at Dewittville Christian Church, Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Rev. Albert Loucks of the Christian Church conducted the services. Music was furnished by the Dewittville Quartet, comprising of, Clancy Gage, Harland Gage, Allen Leet and Ernest Strickland. Penhollow, of 211 Crescent St., Jamestown, aged 51, was instantly killed Saturday evening when a car he was driving was struck by Train 6, the fast eastbound passenger train on the Erie Railroad, at about 10:30. Penhollow’s wife, Pearl, 47, and Leland M. and Marian Fuller, both of Jamestown escaped unhurt. According to an investigation conducted by the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Department and Coroner George a. Middleton of Little Valley, Penhollow, his wife and the other couple, were enroute to Jamestown after stopping in this village. Apparently, Penhollow took the wrong street and in seeking to return to Route 17, he turned onto what proved to be the main line of the Erie Railroad. Coroner Middleton said the man drove 155 feet up the track before he halted the car. A man ran up from the crossing and told the occupants that a train was due, and the three stepped from the car, but Penhollow could not be persuaded to leave, authorities reported. The train demolished the car. Penhollow suffered a crushed head and a crushed chest. Coroner Middleton issued an accidental death certificate. The victim was employed by Nelson & Son, Jamestown’s garbage contractor. Beside his wife, Mrs. Pearl Seekings Penhollow, the deceased is survived by two daughters Mrs. Elizabeth Kepler, Jamestown and Mrs. Bessie King, Laona; four sons, Corp. Raymond Penhollow with the United States Forces in Italy, and Irvin, Chester and William Penhollow, Jamestown; six grandchildren; also two sisters, Mrs. Glenn Baker, Dewittville and Mrs. Mabel Becker, Laona. He was born at Ellery Center, September 24, 1893. Funeral services will be held at the Henderson & Lincoln Chapel Tuesday at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Bemus Point.

Penhollow was killed in action on March 27, 1945 in Germany while serving in the infantry with Patton’s Third Army. He had been overseas since August 1944. Born in the Town of Ellery on May 25, 1925, he attended Bemus Point High School, and before entering the armed forces August 23, 1943, was employed at the National Worsted Mills, Inc. in Falconer. After taking basic training at Camp Upton in an Engineers Battalion he was sent to Plattsburg Barracks, then to Fort Devens, Mass., Elkins W. Va. and Fort Dix, N.J. When he arrived overseas, he was transferred to the Infantry. She was born Nov. 29, 1909, in Latham, Kans., the daughter of Jabe and Lyda Baird Sigman. She graduated business college in Colorado, and had been employed as a secretary for the business manager in the Bemus Point School System. She was a member of the Bemus Point United Methodist Church. She enjoyed needle working, talking books and cooking. She and her family moved from Kansas to Colorado by covered wagon. She was known to be a very selfless person. She is survived by a daughter, Linda Tudor of Lakewood; three grandchildren: Michael Tudor of New Castle, Pa., Kristin Bates of Nottingham, Pa., and Kathleen Delk of Bel Air, Md; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur T. Peterson, who died July 11, 1970; and an infant son, Arthur Peterson Jr; two brothers: Jabe and Lester Sigman; and three sisters: Ruby Warren, Blanche Fellhauer and Mabel Sigman. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Bemus Point United Methodist Church. The Rev. Daniel McBride, Pastor, and the Rev. PJ: 1/8/1958: Everett (Mack) Peterson Jr., 12, of Dutch Hollow Road, died at 4:15 this morning in WCA Hospital of injuries suffered early Saturday afternoon when the toboggan on which he and four other youths were coasting was struck by a car in front of the administration building at Allegany State Park. Coroner Samuel T. Bowers said this morning that he will issue a certificate following investigation into the cause of death. Hospital authorities earlier had listed the boy’s injuries as a ruptured kidney, elbow fracture and head laceration. An operation to remove the injured kidney was performed early Sunday morning, and when a shortage of available blood developed, blood was brought here by sheriff’s deputies from Red Cross supplies at Buffalo, and was also given by two volunteer donors. The boy’s condition was listed as critical from the beginning and special prayers for him were said at services in many Jamestown and area churches Sunday morning. The boys were members of the two confirmation classes of Lutheran Immanuel Church, which were on a picnic at the park, and had left the main group to toboggan on the front lawn of the administration building. The boys were making their first run down the hill, which ends in a park road and when they reached the foot, the toboggan was struck by a car driven by Alonzo Sharpe, 30, Red House, a park ranger off duty. Park officials said Mr. Sharpe was driving about 10 miles an hour when the accident occurred, and apparently did not see the boys because of some bushes along the roadside. Three other boys were injured in the accident, Gary Swanson, 12, of 127 Camp Street, is listed in good condition today at WCA Hospital, and Wayne A. Johnson, 12, of 1372 Newland Avenue, and Conrad Junior Erickson, 12, of 521 Foote Avenue, were discharged from the hospitals, earlier after treatment for injuries. The fifth boy, Howard Culver, 12, of 408 East Eighth Street, jumped from the toboggan before the accident. Everet, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Everet Peterson, who operate a dairy farm on the Dutch Hollow Road, just east of Ellery Center, was in the Seventh Grade at Bemus Point Central School. He was a serious boy, well liked by his neighbors, who saw him frequently driving a tractor and helping his father with the chores around the farm, or riding the horse which he owned and cared for. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Esther and Victoria; two brothers, Vincent and Oscar William; his grandparents, Mrs. Esther Peterman of Jamestown and Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Peterson of Pierson, Fla., formerly of Jamestown, R.D. 1; two aunts, Miss Eleanor Peterson, Jamestown R.D. l, and Mrs. E. He had been a self-employed farmer for 35 years and a rural mail carrier for U.S. Postal Service, prior to his retirement. In former years, he was a construction engineer on Pennsylvania Turnpike Project and the Oakridge Project, Tennessee. A charter member of St. Timothy Lutheran Church in Bemus Point and an associate member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Seminole. A graduate of Bemus Point High School. He had served on Board of Education for Bemus Point School System for 18 years, and as its president for several terms. He was a member of Chadakoin Lodge 130, I.I.O.F., where he was past noble grand, the American Rifle Association, the Ellery Volunteer Fire Department and formerly the Ellery Grange. He had been a maple syrup producer for many years, and had been an Agway representative. Surviving are his wife, Gloria Mackey Peterson, whom he married Dec. 16, 1940; three daughters, Victoria Peterson of Rumson, N.J., Esther Thomas of Bemus Point, and Emily Metzger of Lake Placid, Fla.; two sons, Vincent Peterson of Sunnyvale, Cal., and William Peterson of Bemus Point: 12 grandchildren: Kimberly, Mark, Scott and Kathryn Thomas, Lacey, Nichole, William Jr., Luke, Anne, and Shelby Peterson, all of Bemus Point, Tia and Adam Metzger, both of Lake Placid, Fla.; a brother, Carol O. Peterson of Winston Salem, N.C. and two sisters, Eleanor Peterson Ramackers and Victoria Peterson Carlson both of Seminole. He was preceded in death by a son, Everet Peterson Jr., in 1958; a daughter, Tia Peterson, in 1947; and a brother, Victor Peterson. The funeral will be at 11 a.m., Saturday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Craig B. Swanson, pastor of St. Timothy Lutheran Church, and the Rev. A. Start Drischell, retired Lutheran pastor, will officiate. He had also been employed by Empire Case Goods, Marlin Rockwell Corp., Sprinchorn Heating and Cooling, and All Metal Specialties and had also been a partner in PeCarJo Sheet Metal Co., He was a confirmand of Zion Mission Convenant Church and attended Fluvanna Community Church for many years, where he was a member of its Jubilee Fellowship Group. Surviving are his wife, the former Virginia J. Bitely, whom he married Nov. 13, 1937, in First Wesleyan Church, Falconer; two sons: George E. Peterson of Lakewood and David M. Peterson of Panama; a daughter, Diane M. Anderson of Bemus Point; eight grandchildren: Holly Renee Peterson of Lakewood, Kristin Seeley of Jamestown, Raymond Anderson Jr. of Lynchburg, Va., Wade Anderson of Bemus Point, Mark Peterson of Beaver Falls, Pa., Randall Peterson of Amityville, N.Y., Daniel Peterson of Danville, Va., and Joel Peterson of Panama; one great-grandson; and a sister, Elizabeth Peterson of Jamestown. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Colin D. Anderson, on April 15, 1991; two brothers:
