1865 NY Census:  Poland, Chautauqua, NY

Transcribed by Donna Markey, February, 2014

1.       Some of the images of this census were very faded and difficult to read.  I used a photo editor to increase the contrast so that the writing was more legible.  There may still be marks that I missed or misread in transcription

2.       The only military information included is the list of military deaths, which is a separate worksheet in this document.

3.       No agricultural schedules are included in this document.  The original contains such schedules.

4.       There is a worksheet containing a list of marriages and non-military deaths.

5.       Searches may be done using the Excel Find command.

6.       A copy of the Excel viewer may be downloaded free from the Microsoft website.

7.       The column designated as “Color: Black, White or Mulatto” is used by this enumerator for some other purpose.  There are numbers entered, usually a “1,” other times a number which appears to be the number of children born to this person.

8.       In the column for “Relation to Head of Family” the designation “Child” is used every other row, rather than for each child; the other rows are left blank.

9.       The columns designated for marital status are sometimes carelessly marked, creating erroneous information.  A married man is listed as “widowed” with his wife’s name and information listed on the next line.  Consider this information as unreliable, and seek additional sources.

10.    The marks entered in columns to the right of “Profession, Trade or Occupation” appear to sometimes be entered in the wrong column.  Consider this information as unreliable, and seek additional sources.

11.    In the column for place of birth, the abbreviation “Cott.” Or “Cottn.” Is sometimes used to mean “Connecticut.”

12.    The numbering used for Order of Visitation and Family Number is all but useless.  The enumerator skips numbers and repeats whole series of number.  Use with caution.  I have added an asterisk (*) to those numbers which have already been used.  There is a large number break between Family # 269 and # 300.  No intervening numbers. .  The missing numbers seem to have been added later, or, possibly the pages in the book were bound out of order.

13.    Duplication of family 294 (Stedman) and 304.
