Mr. A.Z. Madison. Clerk Fredonia Baptist Church.

Dear Sir Yours of the 12th inst enclosing a check of Fourteen dollars contributed by your church towards the erection of a Baptist church here was duly received but owing to a pressure of other business I have neglected to acknowledge it till now.

In behalf of our church we return to you our sincerest thanks for your liberal donation. We have recently met with a most serious loss in the death of Dr. Geo. A. Goodrich to whom you refer in your letter. He was one of our best and most efficient members and together with all who knew him here we deeply deplore his early death. During his brief illness he received the best of medical attendance besides the unremitting care & attention of his old friends Messrs Kellogg, Ames & Scott – but all was in vain. Scarcely can we reconcile ourselves to this strange dispensation of Providence & yet we know that it was the will of Him who doeth all things well, & for our brother we feel assured that to die was gain. Thanking you again for your much needed assistance & hoping that you will aid us likewise with your prayers – I remain

Fraternally yours – R.R. Tingley

New York Baptist Educational Society.

Dear Brethren:

The harvest is great, but the laborers are few. The demand for good and efficient ministers of Jesus Christ in our denomination was never so great as now. We, under God, have in past years done much to supply laborers for the field. We were never in a more prosperous state, or a better condition to do this work than now, and God, in answer to prayer, has raised up and sent to our Institution about one hundred and fifty young men, who are now pursuing their studies for the ministry, one hundred and twenty-five of whom are looking to our Society for help, and new applications are continually coming to us for help.

And now, dear brethren, we earnestly ask that you will give us the earliest practicable opportunity to present our cause to your Church, to raise money with which to feed these young men. Jesus Christ says: “I was an-hungered, and ye gave me meat. * * * Naked, and ye clothed me. When, Lord? Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

Please let me hear from you soon, at 76 East Ninth Street, at the American Baptist Publication Room.

Yours in Christ,

J.N. Folwell,

Cor. And Fin. Sec’y of the N.Y. Baptist Educational Society.

Bro D. having been a member of this Church from the time of his baptism, more than nine years since, we are happy to be testimony to his correct deportment, & consistent life, & earnest zeal for the cause of our divine Master. During the past year, while destitute of a pastor, he labored with us for about four months supplying the pulpit & visiting from house to house to the great acceptance of the Church & congregation.

His labors were blessed, & regarded by us as an earnest of his future usefulness & success as a minister of the gospel.

To the Fredonia Baptist Church

Dear Brethren

It is known that in the union of the two Bodies that now constitutes the Fredonia Baptist Church several members did not accord with measures taken but received letters to unite with any other Baptist Chhs. which they might prefer.

In the consummation of that arrangement a course was pursued entirely different from what I expected and understood would be taken, which rendered the union to me unacceptable. Had I known this in the beginning I should not have given my name for membership in the new body. My objection was of so much force as to prevent me from walking with the new body. For this reason as appears from your records I was excluded.

No charge of heresy or immorality was ever alledged against me. It was merely a difference of Judgement about the measures adopted for the constitution of the new union chh. In consequence of this act I have suffered much for the past twelve years. I have now no design or wish to have reconsidered the propriety or impropriety of those proceedings or to disturb the present order or harmony of the church. My only object in this communication is to ask you to rescind the act of my exclusion and to give me a letter of dismission to unite with some one of our sister churches, thereby placing me in the same position of those members who in the beginning received letters of dismission and did not come into the union church.

That this request may receive at your hands such consideration and action as may please our heavenly Father in that day where God makes up his last account, is the earnest prayer of

Yours most respectfully

Whereas it was voted Feb. 13, 1862 by a majority of four to one, “That this Church adopt the Plan set forth in the document just read by Dr Wheelock,” i.e. concerning the scriptural authority for the appointment & the duties of Church Elders; & whereas this vote has stood a dead letter upon our Books for more than ten years; & whereas a difference of opinion concerning the measure still remains among our members with little prospects of a change, & knowing that to the Master each one of us must stand or fall for himself for the acceptance or rejection of this Plan, therefore Resolved that, without expressing any opinion as to the Scriptural merits of the “Plan”, the vote passed Feb. 13. 1862, be rescinded.

To the Fredonia Baptist Church

Dear Brethren

The pastoral relation which has existed between you and myself has been for the most part pleasant and to me profitable. This, my first pastorate was undertaken with much prayerful solicitude, and with some misgivings as to my ability to answer the demands of this people in respect to pulpit gifts. These fears, it seems have been realized in so far as that some of your members are unwilling to contribute towards my support, and others are desirous of a change in pastors.

The knowledge of the existence of such sentiments is an obstacle to a further continuance of my pastoral relations with you.

I cannot labor freely nor can you heartily cooperate with, or be greatly benefited by my labors while a divided sentiment exists.

I therefore must respectfully resign my connection with you as pastor. Which resignation may be regarded as taking effect immediately or at the end of three months at the discretion of the Church.

Praying always for your prosperity and that the Holy Spirit may guide us both I remain

Yours in the Gospel

Letter asking adv. In Salary

[envelope addressed to]

Mr L.B. Grant

Fredonia N.Y.

To the Trustees of the Fredonia Baptist Society,

Dear Sirs,

As nothing has been said on either side with reference to my salary for the second year of my pastorate, & as the first quarter of that year is almost past, I presume it is taken for granted that the salary will be the same as heretofore. It is well known, however, that within a year the prices of even the necessaries of life have been greatly enhanced, so that what was last year a small salary, becomes this year entirely inadequate to the support of my family. I have hitherto been silent in the matter, hoping that the church or the trustees would take some steps towards an increase of the pastor’s salary. But having heard of no movement in that direction, I have now taken the liberty to bring the subject before you, not doubting that the suggestion will meet with your approval as a matter of simple justice.

At the same time, allow me to thank you, gentlemen, for the promptness with which last year’s salary was paid, & especially for the personal interest taken by your chairman in securing that promptness.

Truly yours,

Howard M. Jones,

Pastor.

Copy of Mrs. Ann Whittier alias May to Mrs Jane Colvin

“Lynn Augt 3rd. 1866. (Lynn Mass.)

Dear Friend: It is a long time since I heard from you, and I would have answered your kind letter long before now, but many things have happened to prevent: I have almost given up all correspondence. My health has been quite poor most of the time – neuralgia has troubled me very much, especially in my eyes. I wish that I had taken a letter from the Church when I left Fredonia, but I thought perhaps I might go back for it sometime – it is not likely now that I shall ever travel so far: and I thought perhaps you my friend would be so kind as to get one for me and send it or let some of the deacons send it. There is one thing I wish and that is to have it written in the name with which I entered the church, and which is probably on the Church record – that of Whittier – that is the name my friends here call me by. I have been a regular attendant of the Baptist church here, only I cannot receive the right hand of fellowship until I get my letter. If Mrs Miller is living, please let me know when you write, and send me her address. Give my love to all my friends and acquaintances, and believe you have a large share. I hope your family are all well. I often think of you and them, and wish that I could see you and talk with you as I used to. But it may never be perhaps in this world. Trust we shall meet in the next where partings are unknown – there will every thing be made manifest, and we shall know each other better than ever we have here.

With much love I remain your affectionate friend

Annie Whittier

P.S. You will attend to my request, will you not, dear friend, I am so anxious about the letter. I shall be so much obliged. A.W.”

Dear Brethren & Sisters in Christ: The grace of God saluteth you. Though I have been absent from you in body yet my spirit has been with you, you have ever been remembered by me in my prayers at the throne of grace and I trust that I also have been remembered by you. Since I have been here I have been deprived of the blessed privileges of the church and I feel that I have lost some-what of that warm affection for my Saviour which I once had, but my hope and faith is still in Christ and in him alone do I put my trust.

I have now a new source of encouragement in that there has been a church lately organized here and it is my desire and privilege to unite with this church, therefore I would wish a letter of dismission and recommendation from you that I may become a member of this church, that I may unite my humble efforts with theirs in trying to promote the cause of Christ here on earth and that I may have their watch care and protection. I feel very thankful that God has permitted this young Church to spring up here and I trust that we may have an interest in your prayers that now a tiny sprout it may grow and become a great tree in the vineyard of our Lord, and now with my hearts desire for the prosperity of Zion I remain as ever your fellow laborer and brother in Christ.

Mr. A.Z. Madison

Dear Sir

Having decided to remain in Jamestown during the present year at least We have thought best to unite with the Church here and would therefore request letters for myself and wife if the church see fit to grant them. It seems like breaking the last link in the chain that binds us to home but we think that we should feel more freedom to act and greater personal responsibilities if we were connected with the church in this place. There is an unusual degree of interest manifested here now meetings are held every evening of the week. Several have been converted and the interest increases daily. Eleven have already been baptized and others are waiting. I wish we might hear as good news from home.

Respectfully Yours

Mr A.Z. Madison

Your letter came to hand in due Season, And I must say I was quite surprised that the Church missed me at all but it seems they have after three months absence.

I will admit tis nearly true what you write in regard to the course I have pursued, but I will say that I have an excuse for so doing which I will not relate.

I have always put my trust in God as I have passed through dangers seen and unseen, which I can assure you have been many.

As I was walking to [crossed out ‘to’ and replaced with ‘from’] church with a friend [crossed out: (or I meant to say from) with a friend] I told him I was going to write to the church to which I belonged and see if they will grant me a Letter for I wish to unite with the Baptist Church in this place.

They have a Splendid Church here, as business hour draws nigh I will close by asking you to have the voice of the Church in regard to giving me the desired Letter.

I remain as ever, &c

Christian Friends

I write to you for the purpose of obtaining a letter, to unite with the Church here, I have not had the privilege of attending Church but very little since I came here until now and I did not think it best to cast my lot with them then, there was trouble brewing, and I did not wish to know anything about it. Now we have an excellent Pastor, a very young man, but a Zealous advocate of the Bible, one who is doing a great deal of good, a Praying Man, a worker in the vineyard. He was formerly from New York State, but recently from Chicago, (Rev Mr Tonsey(?)). There is a good deal of interest here among all the Churches, and among us, where it was needed so much, Last Sabbath evening there were three baptized, and at the last Covenant, there were five united by letter. This sounds very small to you, but it is good tidings to the little band here. I believe there are only thirty eight members in all, but they are as one family. Some of you perhaps, have not forgotten, in days that are past and gone, of a few that gathered together to pray for Sinners, when they felt such a burden of Prayer, for lost-souls. We are having some such meeting. Now and may our Heavenly Father impress upon each one of us the necessity of Prayer, to Stay(?) without ceasing(?), I feel that I have lost so much precious time, in not working in the vineyard before, as I should have done, that I should work diligently now, pray for me, that I may not be a stumbling block in the way of others. I think it is necessary as well as a privilege to be under the watchcare of Christian People, hoping this may meet your approbation, please answer so I may present my letter at next Covenant meeting.

With many kind wishes for your welfare, and (?) prayer, for your prosperity, believe me ever your friend, and

Sister in Christ,

Copy of letter mailed to Mrs. Ann Whittier alias May Sept 10. 1866

Fredonia Sept. 10th. 1866.

Mrs. Ann Whittier,

Several days since Mr. L. Colvin handed to me your letter of Augt. 3. addressed to his wife, in order that I might present your request, contained in it, for a letter of commendation and dismission. This I could not very well do before our Covenant Meeting of Sept. 1st. So much time has lapsed since your brief residence here, and so many changes in the membership of the church have occurred in the interim, that few now here could remember you very distinctly.

Soon after your marriage to Mr. Stephen May, to wit on Sabbath March 6th. 1853, you presented your letter of Jany 15. 1853 from the Washington Street Bap. Ch. Buffalo, in which you are named “Ann Whittier”, but as you was then “Mrs. May”, your name was entered on the Church Record, “Ann May” on your reception as a member with us.

We do not recollect seeing you very much in our meetings after said March 6th.

After living with Mr. May about seven months, you left him rather abruptly, and went east; and until the receipt of your letter to Mrs. Colvin, we were ignorant as to whether you were living or dead. We are glad to hear from you after the lapse of time, and to learn that you are “a regular attendant of the Baptist Church” in Lynn, and that you, even at this late day, “desire a standing and fellowship in the Baptist Church” there.

The time, and the circumstances, are such, that we, as a Church, cannot act very intelligently in the matter of your request, without some information from the brethren at Lynn, where you have latterly resided.

We therefore suggest, that you show this letter to the Pastor, Deacons & Clerk of the church with which you wish to unite, (We have been informed that there are three Bap. Churches in Lynn,) so that they can write to us what they know of your Christian character and deportment, for the past and present, and if they express satisfaction and desire for your union with them we will, without delay, do what we can for such a consummation. Hoping soon to hear further through the Pastor and officers of the Church there, & from yourself also, I am Truly Yours,

A.Z. Madison Clerk of the Fredonia Bap. Ch. at Fredonia Chautauqua Co. N.Y.

To the Clerk or Pulpit Care of the

Fredonia Bap Ch

Dear Br or Brethren

Suffer me to institute the inquiry at your hands whether you have yet settled or have any one in view as Pastor. If none and it should be desired I should be pleased to spend a Sabbath with you Supply your pulpit. The Wilsen(?) Bap Ch with whom I have been beloved(?) three or four years  Past is a strong & united Church numbering 250 members. Last Sabbath I baptized 5 and extended the right hand of fellowship to 15  whom I had baptized 3 weeks ago. Others stand as candidates for the Ordinance. Four years ago as many as one hundred made a public profession of Christ – as a Stranger to you I mention these things that my desire to Change fields may be seen, not for want of success on the field, but for Another Cause namely School Privileges. I have two boys, that are away from home attending school, our Academy having failed us. This was the reason of my resignation and desire for Another field of labour.

Should you be without a Pastor and should desire reference to my ministerial life & success As a Servant of Christ I would most Cheerfully refer you to Prof Williams of Buffalo, Rev. S.C.(?) Smith of Lockport, Rev. J. Morgan or French of Rochester All of whom are intimately acquainted with me and have been for years. Dr. Wheelock your former Pastor with whom I have a slight acquaintance may remember me. I trust I shall be pardoned for this direct inquiry, instead of trusting others who proffered to send my name for your Consideration. A Statement of your Condition and desires in response to this note of inquiry will be most gratefully acknowledged.

Yours Most Truly

To the Baptist Church at Fredonia N.Y.

My dear brethren and sisters

Through the providence of The Lord our God my lot has been cast here in this pleasant place – and wishing to serve Him as best I can I deem it necessary to ask of you a letter dismissing me from your number and recommending me to the church here.

It is with heartfelt emotion that the thought comes to me of asking to be transferred to another church – but, as God wills, so be it.

Strong and dear are the ties which bind my affections to the church I call my own – where in youth first fell my tears of penitence – followed by a covenant with my Heavenly Master – and with you to live a life worthy the name of Christian – where first my voice was lifted in prayer for you and I that Jehovah might ever bless us – and where first I strove to teach young souls the way which Christ has pointed out though his word for their salvation.

God has blessed my feeble efforts and caused me praise and Thanksgiving that some of those loved ones under my immediate charge – have found that sweet peace to their souls which only the true Christian can enjoy.

“Bless the Lord, O, my Soul! And forget not all His benefits!”

I have striven to do my duty at all times and many times have failed – but the Lord is gracious and willing to forgive.

My desire is still to work for Him and I leave my labors with you only to continue them with the little church here. They need me and they welcome me. Let your prayers go with me, dear ones, that through Divine Aid I may be instrumental in winning souls to Jesus.

I bid you farewell, praying that you may share in Gods richest blessings always.

Very affectionately

Your brother in Christ

G. Wilton Lewis

1869 Feb. 18th. Resignation of Rev. H.M. Jones

Accepted March 6. 1869 in Covt. Meeting.

To the Fredonia Baptist Church

Dear Brethren,

For various reasons, not the least of which are the health of myself & family, it has seemed best to me to tender you my resignation as your pastor, to take effect on the 1st day of April next. For several months, it has seemed to me that I ought to seek some new field of pastoral labor, where I might labor more efficiently, & be freed from embarrassments that hamper me here. I have not until recently been satisfied however that it would be right for me to forsake a field where I have enjoyed so many tokens of the Divine favor as have been vouchsafed to me in Fredonia; & rend the ties wh. Bind me so closely to this loving people. &, now, that I ask you to release me, the request costs me a sorrow far deeper than you imagine. My acts will, I trust, bear witness, stronger than mere words, of my deep affection for you. I could not willingly part from you except, in the hope, that, by the grace of God some one else may awaken in you a stronger faith in Jesus, & a more thorough consecration to his service. I thank you heartily for the support & sympathy you have given me ever since I came among you six years ago. & I earnestly pray that the richest blessings of our Heavenly Father may be bestowed upon you continually.

My dear Brother,

By a stipulation entered into between this church & myself when I became its Pastor, neither party was to terminate voluntarily the relation without first giving the other three months notice. My health has become so impaired that I think it for our mutual interest to terminate my Pastorate here. I therefore tender to you my resignation, to take effect the first of April next, or the first of May, as may best subserve the interest of the Church.

With earnest desires for your prosperity, I remain yours in the Lord,

Bristol R.I. Nov. 22nd 1869

Dear Bro. Madison,

You may have heard that since I left Fredonia circumstances have occurred to lead me hither instead of to Waterville. I am here as pastor, & the field though considered a hard one has its encouraging features. My family are not yet with me, but probably will be within a week or so. the church are anxious that I should unite with them at once. Please therefore procure for me as soon as possible a letter of dismission for myself & wife to unite with the church in this place. The situation here is beautiful, on the shore of Narragansett Bay, only an hour from Providence by R.R. or steamboat so that I shall have the satisfaction of being very near my aunt in her old age. Our Thanksgiving at Newton passes off very pleasantly. My wife & her two sisters with their husbands & children made a delightful family gathering.

I trust  you are all as well as usual. Please remember me to Mrs Madison & your daughter if she is with you.

Yours truly,

Howard M. Jones
