Adelbert H. Farnsworth (1847 – Before 1856)

Adelbert H. Farnsworth was the third child and second son born to Calvin David Farnsworth and Lydia M. Nichols.  Page 36 of the 1923 Nichols Family Genealogy gives Adelbert's date of birth as January 12, 1847 and mentions that he died in "infancy."  No mention of the place of his birth or death is given.  One genealogical source states that he was born in Chautauqua County, New York, which may be a conclusion drawn from the fact his older siblings David and Sarah were born in that county.  Adelbert H. Farnsworth appears as a 3 year-old child in the 1850 US Census with his family in Collins, Erie County, New York on August 14, 1850 (see Line 7 below), and the family is recorded to have migrated to Colesburg, Delaware County, Iowa later that year.  Adelbert Farnsworth is no longer listed with the rest of his family on Page 616 of the 1856 Iowa Census of Delhi, Delaware County, Iowa.  It is not known specifically where he died or where he is buried (New York or Iowa), but from the census records, one can conclude he died between the ages of three and nine years of age.

Line 7 lists the 3 year-old Adelbert H. Farnsworth (born in New York) with his blacksmith father Calvin D. Farnsworth (age 31), his mother Lydia (27), and siblings David F. (7), Sarah E. (5), and Marshall (10 months).  The family is living next door to the home of Adelbert’s  grandparents Chandler (67) and Betsey Farnsworth (61) and two females Maria (20 or 21) and Mariett Farnsworth (age 18 or 28).
