Generation No. 2

2. Sylvester "Uncle Vet" WORDEN, born June 1856; died December 3, 1942 in Villenova Township, Chautauqua Co., N.Y.. He married 3. Polly "Aunt Polly" E. CROWELL October 13, 1889 in Hamlet, Villenova Township, Chautauqua Co., N.Y..

3. Polly "Aunt Polly" E. CROWELL1, born February 6, 1853 in Villenova Township, Chautauqua Co., N.Y.; died March 7, 1940 in Villenova Township, Chautauqua Co., N.Y.. She was the daughter of 6. Ira CROWELL and 7. Marilla FAULKNER.

Notes for Sylvester "Uncle Vet" WORDEN:

Nathan WORDEN settled on Lot 16 in Township 4 (Cherry Creek) Range 10 in 1824 [ page 285, Andrew W. Young's 1875 "History of Chautauqua County, New York"]. Later he built a saw-mill 1 ½ miles east of Hamlet [page 241, Volume 1, "History of Chautauqua County, New York, and its People" 1921 Editors John P. Downs and Fenwick Y. Hedley] & [page 580, Andrew W. Young's 1875 "History of Chautauqua County, New York"] on the Hamlet-Balcom Corners road in adjacent Township of Villenova where for many years there was both a grist mill and a saw mill, but by 1875 the mills were owned by Eri M. Sanderson. Could he be the father of "Uncle Vet" Sylvester WORDEN??????????

More About Sylvester "Uncle Vet" WORDEN:

Burial: Hamlet Cemetery, Villenova Twn., Chautauqua Co., N.Y.

Event 1: Aunt Polly & Uncle Vet lived in the tiny tenant house directly across the road from Elbert's farmhouse.

Residence: Elbert Warner's tenant house on Warner Hill.

Notes for Polly "Aunt Polly" E. CROWELL:

My grandmother (who lived with us in the village of South Dayton) used to visit her Aunt Polly & her Uncle Vet essentially every week, and almost always took me along when she took them vegetables such as parsnips, carrots, beets, string beans, and pie-plant (rubarb), as well as a couple of dozen eggs, crocks of home-made butter and cottage cheese as well as home-made bread in the 1930's when Vet & Polly were in their 80's. It was my impression that Uncle Vet & Aunt Polly were very poor and probably were furnished this small tenant house for free (during the depression) by Polly's sister Genia and her husband, Elbert Warner, and remained in the tenant house when the farm was left to Elbert's son Avery (grandmother's brother) and even after Avery turned it over to his son Elbert Warner & his wife Cicely Butcher. I do not remember "Uncle Vet" as a very talkative or friendly man.

Notes for Nelson William CROWELL, Rev.:

See the one page "The Revival News" inserted in Caroline Emmogene "Genna" CROWELL's bible given her by her father, Ira, Dec. 25th, 1875 when she would have been 21 years of age and her brother, Rev. Nelson, only about 19 years of age. He was already pastor of the First Christian Church on East Fifth Avenue and his residence was listed as 1114 Hunter Ave.; were these in New York City ?? The Revival was to take place Jan 8th to 15th, no year listed, however if this "Revival News" had been included with the Christmas Gift of the bible, it would have been 1876.

Arlene WARNER WIGHTMAN PENHOLLOW attended a business school in Jamestown, N.Y. in 1935, and remembers going down to Corry, PA to visit Rev. Nelson and his wife Rose; Arlene feels rather certain that their daughter Blanche is NOT the Blanche CROWELL who married in Cherry Creek, N.Y. with the wedding announced in the "Fredonia Censor".

Generation No. 4

12. Abraham CROWELL11, born 1789 in Stillwater Twn., Saratoga County, N.Y.; died 1852 in Villenova Township, Chautauqua County, N.Y.; Buried on his own farm.. He was the son of 24. James CROWELL***, Sr. and 25. Rhoda HIGGINS. He married 13. Betsy WHEELER ABT 1817 in Probably Chenango or Madison Co. -- see notes below.

13. Betsy WHEELER, born ABT 1799 in Vermont; died 1880 in Villenova Twn., Chautauqua County, N.Y.; at age 80.(? 9 Feb 1881 ?).

Notes for Abraham CROWELL:

See Abraham's son Hiram's brief biography on page 284 of Vol 2, "History of Erie County, Pennsylvania", 1884; Warner, Beers, & Co. Chicago, Ill. Supposedly Abraham had 13 children with 6 living in 1884. We have the names and birth years of ten of these 13 children.

In this book Hiram states his father Abraham was born in 1789 rather than in 1793 as stated in the Villenova CROWELL Booklet, but agrees with the death year of 1852; (Abraham was buried on his own farm, and the headstone which was placed on his grave has been destroyed & discarded within recent memory by the Town of Villenova road crew; farm owned by Richard Howard, a Crowell descendant, in 1996). Hiram also states his mother, Betsy WHEELER, died in 1880.

In the order of naming his children in his will, father James Sr. would also indirectly imply that the 1789 is more likely than 1793.

Generation No. 5

24. James CROWELL***, Sr.14, born March 7, 1749/50 in Yarmouth Township, Barnstable Co., Mass. p. 97 V.R. of Yarmouth15; died November 1833 in Hamilton Township, Madison Co, NY (See his will naming children & wife).. He was the son of 48. Seth CROWELL***, Jr. and 49. Mary SEARS. He married 25. Rhoda HIGGINS February 3, 1774 in Eastham Twn.(Harwich Twn. -??), Barnstable Co., Mass.16.

25. Rhoda HIGGINS, born May 5, 1751 in Eastham, Barnstable Co., Mass.; moved to Stillwater Twn., Saratoga Co., N.Y.; died March 21, 1831 in Probably Hamilton Twn, Madison Co, NY Old bible record states Mar 25th.. She was the daughter of 50. Enoch HIGGINS and 51. Sarah (DEAN) DEANE.

Notes for James CROWELL***, Sr.:

Diana L. Gill, 44 Old Littleton Road, Harvard, MA 01451 has done extensive research on the James CROWELL Sr. family, much of it at the NEHGS Library in Boston; she has also hired researchers in eastern central New York to explore early records (deeds, tax lists, wills, probates, Rev War Vets, etc) of Albany, Saratoga, Madison, Chenango, etc. Counties. She has uncovered the Will of James, Sr. in Madison County, N.Y. in which nine children are named including her James Jr. and all three of the brothers who moved to Villenova Township of Chautauqua County, and in which his wife is referred to. She has also followed up in Iowa on Solomon CROWELL who moved there from Villenova, and evidently had a 2nd and younger family who were probably all born in Villenova after most if not all of his younger adult children had died. Tuberculosis was rampart in Solomon's children resulting in several deaths.

James CROWELL, Sr. was born Mar 7, 1749/50 and was the son of Cape Cod Seth CROWELL, Jr and descendant of Yelverton CROWELL (Seth-4, Seth-3, Thomas-2, Yelverton-1). James married Rhoda HIGGINS, daughter of Enoch HIGGINS, Feb. 3, 1774. (See HIGGINS Genealogy) At least 3 members of her immediate family had moved and owned land in Saratoga County where they were on the tax rolls in 1779 at the same date as James CROWELL, Sr. There was also a Seth CROWELL living in the Albany / Saratoga area and it is possible that he could have been James' father although as of January 1997 we believe both Seth Jr. & Seth III were there. His sister Mary was wed in Saratoga County.

We have James Crowel listed on the 1779 Tax rolls of Stillwater Township, Saratoga Co and later he appears as a soldier from N.Y.S. in the Rev. War as does his father Seth, Jr. and probably his brother Seth, III. I first find James CROWEL in Chenango Co. in the 1810 Federal Census. Next his will dated Mar 23, 1814 places him in Hamilton Township, Madison County where his sons James Jr. and Joseph are living.

There are two rather extensive genealogies of the early CROWELL's; "John CROWE and his Descendants", by Levi Crowell, Thomas Y. Crowell & Co., New York, 1903 as well as the copies of the three early 1900's articles of Charles W. Swift reprinted in 1992 as Leonard H. Smith, Jr.'s two volume "Cape Cod Library of Local History and Genealogy", Genealogical Publishing Co., Baltimore.

James' "Intentions of Marriage" recorded in Chatham V.R.; Diana Gill has the actual marriage taking place in Chatham, however somewhere I saw that it took place in Eastham Township.

Adams 1893 "Historical Gazetteer & Biog. Mem. Cattaraugus Co"..

Notes for David CROWELL:

Although we know the 3 brothers lived in Chenango County, we now know the youngest of the 5 brothers (Solomon) stated on the 1855 N.Y.S. Census that he was 56 years of age making his birth year 1799 and that he born in Saratoga County. While David & Abraham died in Chautauqua Co. both Joseph & James Jr. as well as father James Sr. died in Madison Co. (adjacent to Chenango Co.), and Solomon died in Earlville, La Salle Co., Illinois after first moving to Mt. Pleasant, Henry Co., Iowa. We still do not know the birth dates and places of the four sisters.

Notes for Solomon CROWELL:

Virginia Joyce WHITCOMB (retired librarian) of 921 Constitution St., Emporia, KS 66801 spent 18 years in California taking care of her grandparents, Calvin Louis & Minnie Mae DOANE WHITCOMB; Minnie Mae had taken care of her grandmother, Solomon CROWELL'S wife Anna PECK during her later years. Thus Minnie Mae constantly conversed about the family history, and Virginia has since delved into the genealogy with considerable gusto.

The only descendant of Solomon carrying the CROWELL name is Dwight CROWELL, Upland Drive, Snadpoint, ID 83864; 1 (208) 263-2435. He is son of Randolph Foss CROWELL, grandson of Eldred M. CROWELL, great-grandson of Cicero Marcellus CROWELL, and great-great-grandson of Solomon & Anna PECK CROWELL.

Virginia will forward Family Group Sheets on each of Solomon's children along with their family stories to Diana Gill, & I assume that Diana will in turn forward copies to me.

Generation No. 6

48. Seth CROWELL***, Jr.29, born August 7, 1726 in Yarmouth Township, Barnstable County, Mass.; "V.R. of Yarmouth", p. 44.30; died Aft. 1790 in See Census Chatham Twn., Barnstable Co., Mass.. He was the son of 96. Seth CROWELL, Sr. and 97. Mercy (Marcy) NICKERSON. He married 49. Mary SEARS January 15, 1746/47 in Yarmouth Township, Barnstable Co., Mass. (p. 163 V.R.), by Thomas Smith, Clerk.

49. Mary SEARS, born September 4, 1724 in Yarmouth Township, Barnstable Co., Mass. (p. 60 V.R. has Sept. 1724)31. She was the daughter of 98. Silas SEARS III and 99. Elizabeth NICKERSON.

Notes for Seth CROWELL***, Jr.:

A William witnessed a deed of land for Seth & Mary in Saratoga Co. A Seth CROWELL died 1831 in Penfield, Monroe Co., N.Y. (our James Sr. died 1833) with a 2nd wife Hannah, and his will shows children named William, Seth (b 1789), Deborah m to Laton Albro, Roswell dying before 1831 in Manilus, Onondaga Co., and a Betsey CROWELL who m Jonathan Baker.

Seth Jr. appears to have lived in Yarmouth Township, Barnstable Co., Mass. until about 1750, and was in Harwich Township by 1756. He is listed under "Harwich Township" yet residing in Chatham Township in the "1771 Massachusetts Tax Valuation". He appears in Colombia County, N.Y. about the time of the Revolutionary War, and then goes to Sillwater Township, Saratoga County, N.Y. where a Seth Crowell is a tax payer in 1789. This could be Seth Crowell III, his son.

The records of the First Baptist Church of Stillwater has Seth as one of some 20 members who were permitted to form a church at Fish Creek some time before 1800.

Seth Crowel, yeoman, of Northumberland Township, Saratoga Co., N.Y. grants land Aug. 9, 1802 to Elijah Funham and Russell Allington of Northumberland; his wife Mary Crowel signs the deed along with Seth. Wittnesses were Sidney Berry (judge of the Court of Common Pleas) and William Crowell (who may well be another son).

A Seth Crowell appears as witness to a will of a Mr. Fraats in Schoharie County (where some of Seth's brother Lott's children settled) after 1802. No will or probate records have been found for Seth & Mary Crowell in Columbia, Albany, Saratoga, Schoharie, Madison, or Chenango Counties; neither have they been found in Barnstable County, Mass.

An affadavit signed by a Sally Haywood in 1838 says that her family and that of Mary's father and Seth Crowell's family, were neighbors in Concord Township, Columbia County, N.Y. about the time of the Revolution. Next both families moved to Saratoga Township, Saratoga County "a few miles distant from where Burgoyne surrendered his army, and there resided on farms that joined and with the houses just a short distance apart and that they became very close."

Walt Mission has Seth Jr's widowed daughter Mercy/Marcy living next door to an older Seth CROWELL with 2 females and another free person in the household in the 1790 Census in Chatham, & further states that Mercy refers to him in her sale of her property in 1791. This requires further checking-out.

Marriage: January 15, 1746/47, Yarmouth Township, Barnstable Co., Mass. (p. 163 V.R.), by Thomas Smith, Clerk

Children of Seth CROWELL*** and Mary SEARS are:

i. Mercy/Marcy CROWELL32, born August 18, 1748 in Yarmouth Twn., Barnstable Co., Mass. (V.R. of Yarmouth p 97).33; died Aft. 1794 in Date she purchased property in Sandrich Twn; married Solomon GODFREY***, Capt. July 10, 1769 in Chatham Twn., Barnstable Co., Mass; born September 1, 1746 in Chatham Twn., Barnstable Co., Mass.; died December 16, 1786 in Ship wreck; lost at sea off Truro, Cape Cod, Mass..

Notes for Mercy/Marcy CROWELL:

Mercy was living in Chatham Twn, Barnstable Co., Mass. in 1790, and in 1791 she sold her real estate in

Chatham and moved to Sandrich Township. She had purchased the Sandrich property before Mar 5, 1794

(see "The Godfrey's of Chatham, MA" by Elizabeth Pearson White, NEHGR Vol 127, Apr 1973, p 97). She

was still living in Sandrich in 1810 (1810 Census), however no remarriage or death for Mercy is listed in

the Sandrich V.R.'s.

24 ii. James CROWELL***, Sr., born March 7, 1749/50 in Yarmouth Township, Barnstable Co., Mass. p. 97 V.R. of Yarmouth; died November 1833 in Hamilton Township, Madison Co, NY (See his will naming children & wife); married Rhoda HIGGINS February 3, 1774 in Eastham Twn.(Harwich Twn. -??), Barnstable Co., Mass..

iii. Seth CROWELL*** III34,35, born May 31, 1756 in Harwich Twn., Barnstable Co., Mass.36; died 1831 in Penfield Twn., Monroe County, N.Y; married (1) Mary BATTESHEL November 8, 1774 in Chatham Twn., Barnstable Co., Mass.; Intentions & Marriage in V.R. of Chatham.37; born August 1, 1755 in Chatham Twn., Barnstable Co., Mass.; died Aft. October 1802 in Date of father's will.; married (2) Hannah UNKNOWN Aft. 1805.

Notes for Seth CROWELL*** III:

A Seth CROWELL & wife Mary lived and owned land in Northumberland, Saratoga Co., N.Y. ; both they and James CROWELL, Sr. sold land there in the Kayaderroseras Patent within two years of each other and a William CROWELL was a witness on the former's deed. It therefore seems probable that this William was a brother of our James Sr. and Seth III, although William could even have been this Seth III's & Mary's son.

Both Seth III & James Sr. are mentioned in Stillwater Township, Saratoga County in the 1878 "History of Saratoga County", by Nathaniel Bartlett Sylvester; Seth on page 274 as one of the founders of the 1st Baptist Church of Stillwater before 1800, and James on page 294 as a taxpayer on the May 10, 1789 Tax Roll.

This Seth III is somewhat difficult to follow, especially since he & his father with the same name lived close to one another in Saratoga County; we have his birth and that of sister Mary recorded in the Harwich Township V.R.'s and also in the archives of the Sturgis Library in Barnstable, and his "Intentions" as well as his marriage in the Chatham Twn. V.R.'s.

We also know that his wife's family (also spelled BATISHEL) moved to what was to become Canaan Twn., Columbia Co. (then still Albany County), N.Y., only a short distance from Stillwater Township, Saratoga County (also at that time still Albany County). We know that his brother (ourJames Sr) and his in-laws (father & mother-in-laws & 3 brothers-in-laws), were living in Stillwater Twn., Saratoga County and that their sister Mary was wed in Saratoga County.

A Seth CROWELL served in the Rev. War as a private for Harwich Twn., Barnstable Co; this may or may not have been Seth III.

Both Seth III and James had to be in N.Y. Colony before the end of the Rev. War since both are listed as soldiers of Albany Co., N.Y. in that conflict (see the large format Robert's "N.Y. in Revolution"; the small format book seems to have a defective index). A Seth CROWELL is also listed in the 16th Regt. in Albany Co, NY under Col. John Blair & Col. Lewis Van Woert; this was Seth III. Unfortunately there are no Pension Record for either James or Seth in the National Archives.

A Seth CROWELL was a taxpayer for "Saratoga District" of Albany County in 1789, the same time as our James CROWELL. This would be Seth III, and he could very well be the same person who moved from Saratoga County to Penfield, Monroe County which is a very short distance from Sodus, Wayne County were sister Mary died at her daughter's home.

January 1997 up-date: Seth III was living with a 2nd wife (Hannah UNKNOWN, but widow of Joel Northrup who had died in 1805) in Penfield, Monroe County (appointed "fenceviewer in 1808) and died there in 1831. His will was witnessed by a Stephen WAKELEE, whereas his brother's will (James Sr.) was witnessed by a Samuel G. WAKELEE. His son Roswell was deceased before 1831 in Manilius, Onondaga Co. but left two grandsons named Potter & Roswell Jr. He had sons Seth IV and William living in Otto Twn., Cattaraugus County. His daughter Deborah (wife of Laton ALBRO) lived in Pittsford Twn., Monroe County. He also mentions grand-daughters Betsey & Mariah BAKER of Penfield. His 2nd wife Hannah probably deceased since not mentioned in the will. I have yet to personally see a copy of this will.

Several Seth CROWELL's are mentioned in N.Y.S. by about 1825; descendant's of this Seth ??? There was also a Seth CROWELL listed in the 1825 NYS Census for Cobleskill Twn., Schoharie County where Seth III had cousins (children of Uncle Lot CROWELL) living; could this Seth be a Seth IV ??

Per her husband's, (Varsel FULLER'S) Military Pension Records, they resided in New Concord, Albany Co., NY when he entered Revolutionary War Service. Varsel first served under Ephriam Woodworth & Col. Cornelius Van Veghten in the 13th Regt for Albany Co. along with his brother-in-law, our James CROWELL, Sr.; then he has 3 other periods of service.

In 1779 they were still living in New Concord, NY which became Columbia County in 1786; by 1781 the family was living in Saratoga Township, Saratoga Co., N.Y.; this was the same time as Mary's brothers James and Seth III were living in Saratoga Co.

384. Yelverton CROWELL60,61, born ABT 1620 in Norfolk, England; probable (not proved) son of John CROWE.; died October 24, 1683 in West Yarmouth Township, Barnstable Co., Mass. (possibly Mar 8, 1683/84). He was the son of 768. John CROWE and 769. Unknown YELVERTON(?). He married 385. Elizabeth HAMMOND Bet. 1640 - 1641 in Yarmouth Township, Barnstable Co., Mass..

385. Elizabeth HAMMOND62,63,64,65,66, born 67; died October 24, 1703 in Yarmouth Township, Barnstable Co., Mass. (?November)68,69,70.

Notes for Yelverton CROWELL:

There are many, many descendants of Yelverton CROWELL married to CROWELL's; are all these truly intermarriages or are some the descendants of John CROWE (CROWELL) who lived nearby in Yarmouth, and who has been reported as the father, the brother, or other relation to Yelverton???? See page 125 of Pope's "Pioneers of Massachusetts".

On p 20 of "John Crowe and His Descendants", 1903, it is stated that "Yelverton CROWELL who settled at South Sea, in West Yarmouth in 1640, died in 1683, and has numerous descendants." This book also discusses the fact that Yelverton is an old English surname, suggesting that his mother or other female ancestor was of the YELVERTON Family.

Note that there is a village by the name of Yelverton in County Yorkshire, England. See my Samuel Lewis 1831 "Topographical Dictionary of England",Vol 4, p. 597.

Yelverton's sister Elizabeth had at least 5 descendants named Yelverton, and of course there were several named Yelverton in Yelverton's descendants. The references below are most important.

See "The American Genealogist", Vol 35, # 3, July 1959, p 173.

See NEHGR, Vol 125, Oct 1971, pp 231- 236.

See NEHGR, Vol 128, Oct 1974, pp 250 & 251.

Levi Crowell's 1903 "John Crowe and His Descendants" and the 3 Crowell Sections of Leonard H. Smith Jr.'s 1992 "Cape Cod Library" are very important guides although I as well as other Crowell Researchers have found errors as pointed out in the above 3 articles and in checking the V.R.'s of Yarmouth, Harwich, Barnstable, Chatham, Eastham, and Plymouth.

Yelverton would have been about 13 when Mrs. Elishua CROWE left Yarmouth, Norfolk, England the 1st week in May 1633 on the "Elizabeth Bonaventure" under Master John Graves and landed in Boston June 15, 1633 (see p 103 in Charles Edward Banks "The Planters of the Commonwealth". Elishua purchased a house of Edward Jennings in Charlestown in 1634 and joined the 1st Church of Charlestown on Nov 4, 1634.

Yelverton would have been about 15 when John CROWE & FAMILY embarked May 8, 1635 on the "Hopewell" under Master John Driver from Weymouth, Norfolk, England (see p 144 Vol 1 Peter Wilson Coldham's "The Complete Book of Emigrants; 1607 - 1660"). I believe that "Family" included at least Elizabeth and Yelverton, perhaps Nasare & others.

A great number of Yelverton's descendants over at least the next 5 generations were baptized and married in the West Yarmouth Church which was known locally as the "Crowell Church".

More About Yelverton CROWELL:

Event 1: Probably born 1620 to 1626; probable son of preceding John CROWE.

Event 2: Lived in Plymouth before moving to Yarmouth. Also perhaps Charlestown.

Event 5: 1640, See notes.

Notes for Elizabeth HAMMOND:

Yelverton's wife, Elizabeth HAMMOND, is DEFINITELY NOT the Elizabeth HAMMOND who had immigrated with her mother Mrs. Eliabeth HAMMOND at age 15 along with her sister Sarah (age 10) and brother John (age 7) on the "Francis" under Master John Cutting which had sailed from Ipswich, England the last of April 1634; they were from Lavenham, County Suffolk, England. This Elizabeth HAMMOND married Samuel HOUSE and she is named in her father's will of July 1, 1662 (page 347 Volume 2 of James Savage's "Gen. Dictionary of New England". They settled in Watertown, Massachusetts. See p 121 - 124 "Planters of the Commonwealth" by Charles Edward Banks, 1930. Also see pages 67-68 in Vol 2 of Otis' 1888 "Genealogical Notes of Barnstable Families".

Be very careful regarding our Elizabeth's father and mother; there were two Elizabeth HAMMOND's who immigrated with children, but without their husbands in 1634. See:

N.E.H.G.R. Vol 30 Jan 1876 pages 28 - 32

N.E.H.G.R. Vol 14 Oct 1860 pages 331-332

When I submitted a query regarding Elizabeth HAMMOND's ancestry on the Internet, one responder stated that she also had wondered about her origin, and that she had found Yelverton's wife Elizabeth's surname HAMMOND only referred to within the Mormon records of S.L.C. and questioned its veracity.

(letter of Administration to wife was Dec 1, 1684); married Mary LOTHROP January 16, 1672/73 in Barnstable Twn; her 1st marriage; see Barnstable V.R.; born March 22, 1653/54 in of Barnstable, Mass. (also spelled LATHROP); died Aft. 1708 in Woodbridge Twn., Middlesex Co., N.J..

Notes for Edward CROWELL, Sr.:

All of Edward CROWELL's & Mary LATHROP's first 7 children were born in Barnstable Township, Barnstable Co., Massachusetts and are documented in Barnstable's V.R. as is the marriage of Edward & Mary. Their 2nd daughter died at 5 days of age, and their sixth child (a daughter, Bathsheba or Bathshua) died before age 1. His 8th child (Thankful) was born inWoodbridge, Middlesex Co., N.J.

Edward fined by Plymouth Colony Court Oct 1668 -- Quaker beliefs.

Edward married Mary LOTHROP Jan 16, 1672/73 of Barnstable Twn, from a rather wealthy & well-known family.

Edward Debtor to estate of John Gray of Yarmouth Feb 10, 1673/74 for 7 barrels of tar.

Edward paid tax assessment for King Philip's War in 1676.

"Cape Cod Library", p 1094, has 7 of Edward's children born in Barnstable Twn, including Edward Jr June 6, 1685.

Edward & family moved to Woodbridge, N.J. between Edward Jr.'s birth (June 6, 1685) and Thankful's birth (about 1687).

Edward died in Woodbridge, N.J. July 31, 1688; Mar 1, 1688/89 wife Mary was awarded "Letters of Administration".

Edward's widow Mary married Samuel DENNIS Dec 3, 1695 (I have also seen 1689).

Edward's 2nd & 6th born daughters deceased in Barnstable Twn; son Benjamin not named in the Power of Attorney assigned Samuel DENNIS Mar 5, 1694/95, and thus he probably was also deceased by this time; only Mary, Yelverton, Joseph, & Edward Jr. are named.

In the Inventory of estate of John STUBS of Cape May (will dated Aug 29, 1702), debtors (amongst many) include Edward's children Yelverton, Joseph, Barnabus, Samuel, and Mary; this may have been for transportation by sea from Woodbridge to Cape May all five settled after 1702.

Cape May is at the bottom tip of N.J. whereas Woodbridge is just across from Staten Island, a long distance apart.

John Proctor, 4142 Hackett Road, Shortsville, Ontario County, NY 14548 (jproctor@spacetech.com) has data on the Edward CROWELL Family, and lives very close to us.

Note the "strange data" and references given in World Family Tree, Vol. 11, Pedigree # 890 notes for this couple.

Event 1: Moved to Woodbridge, N.J. - see my contact with The Cape May Historical Society.

Event 2: See V.R. of Barnstable, MA on p 121 "The Mayflower Descendant" Vol 4, 1902

Event 3: His Family may have been Quakers, & thus N.J. move of some.

Residence: Bef. 1688, Yarmouth Twn., Barnstable Twn., Barnstable Co.; moved to Woodbridge, N.J. (?1684

Notes for Mary LOTHROP:

See LOTHROP pages 162 - 211 for very interesting summary of Rev. LOTHROP's family, his moves, & his practices. Swift; Genealogical Publishing Co., 1001 Calvert Street, Baltimore; 1991. iii. Samuel CROWELL73, born ABT 1646 in Yarmouth Twn, Plymouth Colony; died April 12, 1723 in Yarmouth Twn., Barnstable Co., Mass.; other researchers state in N.J.74; married Hannah FULLER ABT 1673; born in of Falmouth, Mass.; see Samuel's notes..

Notes for Samuel CROWELL:

Samuel granted land next to father Yelverton's at South Sea (West Yarmouth) in 1669.

Samuel on Tax list at Yarmouth in 1676.

Samuel took Inventory estate of James Claghorn, Sr. july 21, 1683.

Samuel granted marsh land "Western Swan Pond River" (Parker's River) Nov 6, 1685 already in possession 10 yr.

Samuel was a "Justice" in will of Caleb Carman Sr. Aug 5 1693 in Cape May, N.J.

Samuel deeded Apr 22, 1695 226 acres in Cape May, N.J. & called "Gentleman" from the West Jersey Society of Friends (Quakers).

In Nov 1745 & Mar 1749 "a Samuel CROWELL" was indicted for High Treason amongst the rioters of Essex Co., N.J., and in the Sept. 11, 1749 issue of the "New York Gazette" he advertised 100 acres for sale in Woodbridge, N.J. This could have been a possible son, or even a grandson, nephew, etc.

Cape May is at the bottom tip of N.J. whereas Woodbridge is just across from Staten Island, a long distance apart.

See N.E.H.G.R. 1995, p 347.

I still question the data that Samuel moved to N.J., since his daughter Hannah would have only been about 13 in 1688 when he is said to have moved to N.J. and she wed Joseph STUDLEY, Jr. 12 April 1706 in Barnstable Twn., Barnstabl;e Co., Mass.; Samuel's date of death is given as 12 April 1723, and it is recorded on page 155 of the "Vital Records of Yarmouth Twn., Barnstable Co., Mass.", although this other researcher has the same date and stated "probably N.J." More research on the 22 Apr 1695 land deed and the 5 Aug 1693 will of Caleb Carman Sr. in Cape May, N.J. is required. Could Edward's son Samuel (birthdate uncertain but probably some time after 1673) be the Samuel referred to in these two documents?? The reply to my earlier letter from the Historian of Cape May would seem to indicate that they have considerable data on the early CROWELL's there, but for some reason are a bit reluctant to give it out except in answers to specific questions.

769. Unknown YELVERTON(?), died Bef. March 21, 1625/26 in Date buried this date New Buckenham, Co. Norfolk, England; ? Complications of childbirth.. She was the daughter of 1538. Edward YELVERTON(?), PhD and 1539. Nazareth UNKNOWN.

Notes for John CROWE:

See N.E.H.G.R. Vol. 125, 1971; pp 231-236 and see T.A.G. Vol 35, July 1958, page 173. These references are very, very important.

John's 2nd wife Elishua had arrived on the "Elizabeth Bonaventure" which left Yarmouth, Co. Norfolk, England the 1st week of May and arrived at Boston June 15, 1633; she was listed separately on the ship's passenger manifest but was traveling with the the well-to-do Thomas CHUBBOCK/CHUBBUCK of Hardingham, Co. Norfolk, his wife Alice, & their daughters Sarah & Rebecca.

Perhaps Elishua was the sister of Thomas CHUBBOCK or other relative of him or his wife; his wife Alice or Anne came from a very large family, but had no sister named Elishua. The home that Elishua purchased in Charlestown from Edward Jennings was also adjacent to the one where the Chubbuck Family lived. Could they have looked after and help support Elishua, until John CROWE arrived two years later with the surviving children of his 1st marriage?

785. Dorothy JONES, born ABT 1608 in Queen Camel, Co. Somerset, England; died March 19, 1677/78 in Yarmouth Township, Barnstable Co., Mass..

Notes for Richard (SAYRES) SEARS:

NOTE WELL !!! The ancestry of Thomas Brainerd by Dwight Brainerd; Richard SEARS born in England. about 1612; died at Yarmouth, MA; buried 26 Aug 1676; married Dorothy JONES. A strange pedigree, in part at least concoted by that able genealogist Dwight Brainerd, but (alas !!) occasional frabricator of illustrious pedigrees, the late Horatio G. Somerby, was given circulation in 1857 when Rev. E.H. Sears included it in all innocence in "Pictures of the Olden Time". This pedigree was gently but effectively castigated by Samuel Pearce May in 1886 in an article "Some Doubts concerning the SEARS Pedigree", N.E.H.G.R. (Vol 40, pp 261-268. Four years later Mr. May brought out the authoritative genealogy of the SEARS Family (which I have in my library).

Ancestry of Richard SEARS. He was taxed at Plymouth Mar 25, 1633 but seems to have moved to Marblehead, then part of Salem, Mass where his brother-in-law Rev. Anthony THACHER settled in 1635. Early in 1639 he accompanied THACHER in the settlement of Yarmouth.

Dorothy Jones was a sister of Elizabeth Jones, the 2nd wife of Rev. Thacher & a brother of Richard Jones of Dorchester, Mass. who died intestate. The brother's widow made Rev Thacher a trustee of the estate. Richard's son Samuel in his will made bequests to his 6 cousins .... 3 children of Anthony & Elizabeth THACHER & 3 cildren of Richard & Dorothy SEARS. Richard SEARS had referred to "Brother Thacher" and Thacher's son John had referred to Richard Sears as "uncle" which led to the erroneous assumption that Richard's Dorothy was a sister of Anthony Thacher.

Notes for Richard HIGGINS:

Some have claimed that Richard Higgins arrived in Plymouth on the "Anne" in 1623 along with his friend Nicholas Snow, that he returned to England, and again sailed to New England in 1632. K.C. Higgins in "The Higgins Family" believes this improbable, and that he most likely on one of the several ships which arrived at Salem, Mass between 1629 and 1632. He was certainly not assigned any land in autumn 1623 when the rest of the Anne's passengers received parcels.

He did settle at Plymouth in time to raise or purchase some of the corn crop of 1633 and was thus taxed.
