EARLY POSTMASTERS

OF CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY, NY
APPOINTED BEFORE 1900

This information  was taken from EARLY POST OFFICES OF CHAUTAUQUA  COUNTY, NEW YORK
By  C. Malcolm Nichols  1960.
The  original book was reprinted in 1997 by BERRYBOOK PRESS, P. O. Box 231, Ashville, NY 14710.
This fascinating book gives a detailed history of the formation of post offices in Chautauqua County.
It also gives exact dates that the postmasters were appointed and  additional information on where each post office was
located; name of post office and sometimes detailed personal information about the postmaster. Postal stamps and covers
are shown and photos of  early post offices.  I recommend buying this book if you are interested in the history of
Chautauqua County.
Copies are still be available. Write to the above address.  I paid $18.95 for my copy.  Worth every penny.

I have included only those postmasters who served before 1900,
unless the office was discontinued shortly after 1900 or was established after that date.

Note: C. Malcolm Nichols in his book Early Post Offices Of Chautauqua County, New York  page 8
states: “Prepayment of postage was not required,  the writer merely placed his letter in the post office
where it was rated and forwarded.  The receiver paid the postage when taking the letter from the
office of receipt.  If the sender did prepay the postage, his letter ws marked PAID when rated.”

Undoubtedly this is why many letters were left at the post office – the recipient either did not wish to
Pay the postage due or had not the funds to do so.
