John Damcott/Dancott from Westfield was Jan Derk Damkot, b.12 May or 12 Dec
1840 Winterswijk, Gelderland, Netherlands, son of Gerrit Jan Damkot and
Johanna Sellink Damkot. He came to U.S. in August 1858, single. Here his
name was usually spelled John Demcott. His first wife was Emaria Thornton
and they lived in Westfield. Four children. Emaria died 27 Oct 1876 in
Westfield and is buried in the Westfield Cem in the village. In 1880 John
was a widower living in Harmony. In 1920 he and his second wife Minerva
(maiden name not known to me) were living in Harmony, probably in Niobe.
John died 2 Feb 1892 in Niobe; Minerva died there 12 Jan 1927; both buried
in Niobe Cemetery.
John enlisted 31 Oct 1862, served with Co.C, 9th Cavalry, NY Vols, mustered
out at Culpeper Court House 9 Jan 1864.

July 21, 1862, Col. A. F. Allen, succeeded, September 3,
1862, by Col. Jeremiah C. DRAKE, received authority to recruit
this regiment in the counties of Chautauqua and Cattaraugus; it
was organized at Jamestown and there mustered in the service of
the United States for three years September 11, 1862. The men
not to be mustered out with the regiment and some of its
officers were transferred to the 3d Infantry June 13, 1865.

He was an abolitionist and is known to have offered his house as a refuge for runaway slaves.
He later became a member of the newly formed Republican party
