Killed Company H, 112th Infantry Regiment New York on 27 October 1864 in Darbytown Road, VA
* Notes of the 112th Chautauqua site
Lieutenant George W. Edmonds was the son of William and Lucy Edmonds, of Chautauqua.
A young man, of vigorous, energetic character, who had improved well the limited advantages of his youth,
he went to New York City as a clerk in 1860, and after a residence there of somewhat more than two years
returned to the County in the summer of 1862, to enlist in the Regiment then forming.
He was made 1st Sergeant at the organization of this Company, and after the resignation of Lieutenant Smith
received promotion as 2d Lieutenant, and in the spring of 1864 as 1st Lieutenant.
He was a cool, fearless officer, often detailed to duties that required the highest courage and discretion.
His moral and religious character shone conspicuous amid the temptations of camp life,
and he has left a memory behind him which will be ever fragrant to all his associates.
While directing the portion of the line of skirmishers under his charge on the 27th October,
near Darbytown Road, in the midst of a galling fire pressing it slowly up toward the enemy's works,
he was shot through the head and killed instantly. His remains were secured and forwarded home for interment.

below data for this soldier from a descendant of this family, Thelma HEIL of
Clymer NY;
Thelma has extensive files on the Dutch families of Chautauqua Co NY and is
volunteering her data to anyone seeking it. theil@alltel.net
John enlisted 11 Aug 1862, was mustered in on 15 Aug 1862 as a private in Co.D of the 112th Infantry of the NY Volunteers.
He participated in battles at the Siege of Suffolk, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor, & Chaffin's Farm in Virginia and at Fort Fisher in North Carolina.
On 15 Jan 1865, at Fort Fisher, he was wounded in the neck.
He was taken to the hospital at Fort Monroe in Virginia and although he was recovering from the wound,
he died of tetanus on 7 Feb 1865.
He is buried in Hampton National Cemetery in Hampton, VA, Section E, grave #1410.
His grave, beneath the spreading limbs of a tall tree, is clearly marked with a simple stone that says,
"Jno Esselink, New York, Feb. 7, 1865."
There also is an inscription for John on his parents' tombstone in Holland Cemetery in Clymer,
but the stone is so weathered that the inscription is barely readable. ( Thelma's family )
John Esselink was a brother of my great grandmother, Anna Gesiena Esselink Damcott.
He was born 1 Feb 1841 in Winterswijk, Gelderland, Netherlands, son of Gerrit Hendrik and Janna Berendina Lomans Esselink
He came to the United States with his parents and sisters in 1845, arriving at New York City on June 25th.
They traveled by boat up the Hudson River, across New York State on the Erie Canal to Buffalo,
and by lake boat to Westfield, which they reached on July 4th. John's Dutch name was Jan Albert Esselink.
Other than a little brother who died before five years of age, John was the only son.
He had five sisters, all who married and have many descendants in the Clymer area and elsewhere today.
At the time John entered the army he was the sole support of his parents and two minor
sisters as his father had been blind for many years.
