II serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 as a staff sergeant and a radio operator on a B-29 aircrew stationed on Saipan Island in the Pacific Theatre with the 20th Air Force. He flew more than 30 missions over Japan. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Two Clusters.

Served with a medical detachment. Was decorated with the Bronze Star for his part in the invasion of southern France on Aug. 21, 1944, the same invasion and the same date on which his brother, Richard, was killed. He won the award for heroic tending of the wounded under fire while he himself was wounded. He was hit in the right wrist by fragments but continued to aid more severely wounded comrades and was credited with saving the lives of several. Discharged 1945. Fluvanna Cemetery.

ECKSTROM, Richard David. Lived in Greenhurst, NY. b. May 2, 1925. d. Aug. 21, 1944 during W. W. II. Was age 19 when killed in action Aug. 21, 1944 in southern France. He served in the infantry, landed in France during the southern invasion, having been stationed in Italy. Inducted in the Army the day following his graduation from Bemus Point High School in 1942, he left for Camp Croit, S.C. on Oct. 9, of that year, and went overseas in March, arriving first in North Africa, later going to Italy, where he saw action and joined an infantry division at the Anzlo beachhead. He also participated in the march on Rome. While in Italy, he enjoyed a reunion with an older brother and had their photos sent home. Fluvanna Cemetery.

B. 26th Infantry, First Division, he took part in eight major engagements in North Africa and Sicily including the battles of Kasserine Pass, Matteur, El guetar, Bizerte and Bedja. He was with the first company of troops to land on the shore of Sicily July 10, 1943. He was taken prisoner of war that same month and set to Stalag 2-B in Germany where he remained for 21 months.
