Garwood Irma Hanson 1912 1941 PJ September 1, 1941: Mrs. Irma Hanson Garwood, wife of Joseph Garwood of Greenhurst, died Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Jamestown General Hospital two hours after being admitted. She was 29 years old. Mrs. Garwood, a daughter of Hannah Anderson and the late Alvar Hanson was born in this city Matrch 22, 1912. She was a graduate of Jamestown High School and the Genesee Normal School. Mrs. Garwood served on the faculty of the Celoron High School for two years and was a member of the Auxiliary of the Fluvanna Five Department and the Alpha Delta Society. She is also survived by two daughters, JoAnn and Judy Garwood and her mother, Mrs. Hannah Anderson Hanson, Jamestown. The remains are at the Boyd funeral Home where the funeral will be held Thursday at 2:30 p.m. with burial in Lake View Cemetery, Provided by Kathy M. Sloan, 2004.

1876 1962 PJ: Nov., 1962: John H. Girts, 86, of Girts Road, Jamestown, a former logger and wood contractor, died Saturday (Nov. 3, 1962) in his home. He was the son of John and Alice Smith Girts and was born in Helan Furnace, Pa. His wife, Villie Girts, died in 1928. He was a retired farmer and a member of Union Grange No. 244. He also worked as a logger and wood contractor in Warren, Elk and Claridon Counties, Pa., before moving to Girts Road. He is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Evea Webster of Willets, Calif., and Mrs. Alice Conner of Paradise, Calif.; three sons, Lloyd Girts and Robert Girts, RFD 1, Jamestown, and Harold Girts of Lakewood; seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren, a brother, Harry L. Girts of Titusville, Pa. Funeral service will be in henderson-Lincoln Funeral Home at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. Rev. Harry Girts, pastor of Brockport Methodist Church will officiate. Vangle C. GOGOLATSE, 94, of 111 Steele Street, died at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at Jamestown General Hospital. He was born in Korcia, Albania, March 25, 1870 , the son of Christ and Katherine Gogolatse. He came to Jamestown in 1901, and was employed by the Jamestown Table Co., for more than 40 years. He was a member of St. Louis Albanian Orthodox Church. Surviving are his wife, Theo Vasil Gogolatse of Jamestown; a daughter, Mrs. Olga Shagla of Detroit, Mich., a son, Leo Gogolatse of Irvine, Pa.; two grandsons, Mitchell Louis of Detroit, Mich.; and Mrs. Victoria Swanson of Jamestown; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday in the St. Louis Albanian Orthodox Church. The Rev. George Loli will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. THe family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lind Funeral Home.

1923 2002 8/31/2002 - He was born July 1, 1923, the son of Dr. Charles E. and Francesca Bartlett Goodell. He was a 1941 graduate of Jamestown High School and Williams College in 1944. A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served as a radio technician from 1944 until 1946. In 1951, he graduated from Buffalo Law School, was employed as a claims adjuster for Travelers Insurance Co. until 1953, then practiced law in Jamestown until the time of his death. He was master of Sylvan Lodge and was active in many community organizations. He also obtained several patents. A frequent contributor to the Reader's Forum column of The Post-Journal, he was also the author of articles published in the Buffalo Law Review and New York State Bar Association-Journal. He had many friends with whom he enjoyed sharing humorous stories. Surviving are five sons: David, Thomas, Andrew, John and Daniel; several grandchildren; a sister, June Freeman; and a brother, George W. Goodell. He was preceded in death by two brothers: Charles E. Goodell and James P.B. Goodell; and a sister, Francesca Goodell Rappole. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev Norman G. Bagaas, pastor of First Covenant Church, will officiate. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the family plot in Lake View Cemetery. Perry W. GOODWIN, connected with administration of Lake View cemetery affairs for a half century, died after a long illness at his home, 102 Buffalo street, at 5:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. He was 75 years of age and surviving are is wife, Mrs. Jennie BULL GOODWIN; a son, Dr. Frank P. GOODWIN of this city; a brother, Richard Vernon GOODWIN of Tarpon, Fla.,and two granddaughters the Misses Betty and Janet GOODWIN of Jamestown.
Mr. GOODWIN rounded out 50 years of service with the Lake View Cemetery association on Oct. 14, 1928, when he retired from active business. He began work at the cemetery at the age of 18 when he came to Jamestown and secured a position as a laborer. Subsequently he was promoted assistant superintendent and finally to the position of superintendent.
Mr. GOODWIN was born on a farm in the town of Conewango, Cattaraugus county, Aug. 16, 1860, a son of Augustus and Julia GOODWIN. He Married Jennie BULL in 1880, and besides Dr. GOODWIN, a daughter who died in childbirth was born to them.
Mr. GOODWIN took a keen interest in every phase of cemetery management, with intense pride in the beautiful plot which he superintended for so long a period. He was also active in the affairs of the Methodist church, until a few years ago being prominently identified with the Buffalo Street M. E. work on the east side.
Mr. GOODWIN served as a member of the board of directors of the former Farmers & Mechanics bank for many years and at one time was chairman of the board. He was a member of the local Masonic bodies and also of Ellicott lodge I. O. O. F.,of this city. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p. m. at the family residence, with interment in Lake View cemetery.

Goss Susan Johnson
2000 CLYDE — Susan Johnson Goss, 79, died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000. The body was cremated. A memorial service and interment will be held at a later date in Lakeview Cemetery in Jamestown, N.Y. Local arrangements were made by North’s Funeral Home, 242 Orange. Mrs. Goss was born and raised in Jamestown, N.Y. She was employed for many years at Bigolow’s (*Bigelow's) in Jamestown, and later at Blackstone Corporation. She married Edward A. Johnson in 1944, in Warren, Penn. He died Feb. 23, 1972. She married Robert E. Goss in 1979. He died in 1997. She retired to Abilene in 1982. She was active in the Abilene YMCA. Survivors include two sons, Stephen Johnson, of Abilene, and the Rev. 1926 The funeral of Mrs. Barbara GOSSETT was held from the home of her son Edward L. Gossett, 622 Prendergast Avenue yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Dr. Ames Maywood, pastor of the First Methodist Church conducted the services. The bearers were Frank Witt, J. Lawrence Hills, William G. Hills, Marvin C. Gossett, William E. Stormer and Donald B.Griffith. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery.

Gourley Robert E.
1926 2001 6/28/2001 - Robert E. Gourley, 75, of 110 Chadwick St., died at 3:50 p.m. Thursday (June 28, 2001) in his home. A Jamestown resident since 1934, he was born March 8, 1926, in Canton, Ohio, a son of David C. and Faith E. Pecher Gourley. He was an engineer with the former SKF Bearings, where he was employed for 40 years, retiring in 1991. He graduated from Jamestown High School in 1943 and Alfred University in 1950. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, from May 8, 1943, until his discharge May 19, 1946. He served on the USS Biddle and USS Holton. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a trustee, served on the music committee and was a 50-year member of the choir. He was also a member of Ira Lou Spring Post 149 American Legion, Jamestown Coral Society, Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, Vikings Lodge, American Association of Retired Persons, the former Chautauqua Regional Choir and the Jamestown Area Jaycees. He was a former volunteer at American Red Cross and in 1943 obtained Eagle Scout status in the Boy Scouts of America, where he remained active as an assistant Scoutmaster for many years. He loved his family and enjoyed his job, reading and music very much. Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Danforth Gourley, whom he married June 14, 1947; two daughters: Kathleen A. Gourley of Jamestown and Cynthia D. Anderson of Matthews, N.C.; a son, Robert E. Gourley of Missouri City, Texas; three grandchildren: Timothy R. Anderson of Jamestown, Jill E. Anderson of Matthews, and Carajean Gourley of Missouri City; and a brother, Bruce M. Gourley of Frederick, Md. The funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday in the First Baptist Church. The Rev. E. Allen Rogers, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in the Lind Funeral Home. Mrs. Martha Griswold Grandin, 74, of 1207 Prendergast Avenue, wife of the late Daniel Hunt Grandin and chairman of the board of the D. H. Grandin Milling Company, died at her home at 9 PM Friday after a long illness. Mrs. Grandin was born in Jamestown, July 13, 1877, the daughter of Daniel and Martha Townsend Griswold. She attended the local schools and was grazduated from Jamestown High School in 1895 and from Wellesley College in 1899. She was married to Daniel Hunt Grandin in 1913 and he preceded her in death in April 1931. Mrs. Grandin became president of the Grandin Milling Company 10 years prior to the death of her husband and retired in 1951.She was a member of the WCA Hospital Board for more than 50 years and its vice president about 30 years. In addition she was a member of the hospital building committee. Mrs. Grandin helped to found the Chautauqua Region Hospital Service Corporation and was a member of the board of directors of that organization for many years. She was also a former member of the Community Chest borad of directors and the Southern Chautauqua County Chapter of the Red Cross. Mrs. Grandin assisted in organizing the Jamestown Municipal Laboratory and served on its board of managers. At the time of her death she was a member of the Mozart Club, the Daughters of the American Revolution and The Fortnightly. Surviving are two sons, Lt. Col. Daniel Griswold Grandin, now serving with the US Army in Korea and John Grandin of Jamestown; and five grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Daniel Grandin were held from the Henderson-Lincoln Chapel at 2 PM Tuesday. Rev. Albert A. Martin, pastor of the First Congregational Church, officiated. Bearers were Samuel Price, Charles Price, William Fletcher, Jr., Dr. James Goodell, Dr. A. W. Rappole, Paul W. Jones, Russell W. Smith and Lyle Himebaugh. Honorary bearers were Charles Melhuish, E. Snell Hall, Fletcher Goodwill, Wilson Price, and Charles Pickard. Burial was in Lake View Cemetery.

Grann Dorris E. Anderson 1914 2003 Dorris E. Grann, 88, of 2486 Falconer-Frewsburg Road, formerly of 55 Durant Ave., died at 8 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 7, 2003) in WCA Hospital.
A lifelong area resident, she was born Nov. 11, 1914, in Jamestown, the daughter of Carl A. and Gertrude Blakely Anderson. She was a 1932 graduate of Jamestown High School, and had in earlier years been employed by the former Blackstone Corporation. An avid reader, she had done much of her traveling through the books that she so enjoyed. She had resided with her son and daughter-in-law, Dana, who provided Dorris with all her necessary home care needs for the past 21/2 years. She will also be sadly missed by her nieces: Pamela Graham, Jacquelyn Casto and Stefanie Mittlefehldt. Surviving are a son, John B. Grann of Falconer; and two grandsons, Casey J. and Jay A. Grann, both of Falconer. She was preceded in death by her husband, August E. ''Augie'' Grann, whom she married Oct. 3, 1936, and who died March 25, 1984; a brother, Ted Anderson, who died May 2, 1982; and a sister, Janet ''Toots'' Everett, who died Dec. 31, 1989. The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. today in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Mary Krahn, chaplain of Hospice Chautauqua County, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. Friends will be received two hours prior to the service in the funeral home.

Brockman.She is survived by two daughters: Bernice Brockman of Broadview,
Ill., and Queen Roberts of West Palm Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 11
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert
L. Amos, who died March 6, 1971; her second husband, Percy Graves, who died
July 5, 1976; a son, William Roberts, who died March 6, 1993; four sisters;
and two brothers

p.m. Friday (March 21, 2003) in WCA Hospital. She was born Aug. 13, 1914,
in Salamanca. She is survived by her son, Gregory Day Greendahl of
Jamestown.She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald W. Greendahl,
whom she married Oct. 30, 1941, and who died Dec. 8, 1994; and a brother,
Royce Day.

1918 1975 1975 - Henry Nelson (Bud) Greenwood, 58, of Foote Avenue Extension, Jamestown, Chautauqua County, New York, died August 30, 1975 in WCA Hospital of cancer. Prior to retirement because of health, he was employed by Blackstone Corporation and had previously been employed by the former Rane Tool Company for 26 years. A native of Stillwater, he was born Novemberf 4, 1918, a son of Henry P. and Jenny Nelson Greenwood and had been a lifelong resident of the area. A veteran of World War II, in the Army Corps of Engineers, he was a member of the Randolph American Legion and Lakewood Rod and Gun Club. Surviving are his wife, Alice Noyd Greenwood, whom he married December 7, 1940; a son Gerald Greenwood of Jamestown; one daughter, Cynthia Greenwood Sheldon of Frewsburg; six grandsons; his father Henry P. Greenwood and two sisters, Mrs. Marian Berg of Stillwater and Mrs. Marjorie Davis of Sumter, S.C. The funeral service will be in the Lind Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery. Griffith Edith H. Hall 1895 1930 PJ: Mar. 31, 1930: Mrs. Edith H. Griffith, 144 Bowen Street, died suddenly at the home of a neighbor about 9:30 o'clock last night. She had gone next door to call when she was overcome by a heart attack and passed away shortly thereafter. Mrs. Griffith was born in Great Valley, Cattaraugus County, on May 23, 1867 and was 62 years, 10 months and 7 days old. She was married on October 25, 1895, at Ross Mills to W. Andrew Griffith and had lived in Jamestown for a number of years. She was the Past State Assembly President of Rebekahs and a member of Princess Rebekah Lodge No. 252, having been prominent in lodge activities for the past quarter of a century. She was one of the speakers at the meeting of Grand Lodge officers of the I.O.O.F. in Jamestown on March 10th. Mrs. Griffith had been a member of the Maccabee Lodge for the past 32 years and was a member of the Pioneer Club of that organization which she entertained at her home last Friday afternoon. She was also a member of the Woman's Relief Corps. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Ella H. Damon of Gerry, a brother, William A. Hall of Ross Mills and two nephews, Lawrence Damon of Gerry and Clyde Hall of Ross Mills. Her husband, W. Andrew Griffith, died December 10, 1929.Up until the time of her unexpected death, Mrs. Griffith had been in comparatively good health although subject to heart trouble. She was planning to attend the assembly of Rebekahs at Alexandria Bay this summer.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday from her home at 144 Bowen Street, the time to be announced later. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

1901 1996 Obituary: Anna L. Gustafson, longtime resident of Jamestown, died Tuesday (Dec. 31, 1996) in Kennestone Hospital, Marietta, Ga. She was 95. Born in Pennsylvania, the former Anna Arnvall, also lived in South Wales before moving to Jamestown, Chautauqua Co NY . A homemaker, Mrs. Gustafson was a longtime member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Jamestown. Survivors include a daughter, Alvira Penny of Marietta; two sons, William of South Wales and David of Highland, Utah; a sister Alma Biser of Frederick, Md.; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Gustafson Carol B. Powers 1922 2003 Carol B. Gustafson, 81, of 42 Liberty St., died at 8:42 p.m. Thursday (Aug. 14, 2003) in WCA Hospital. She was born May 27, 1922, in Jamestown, the daughter of Leland R. and Mildred Holt Powers.She was a 1942 graduate of Jamestown High School. She was a member of Christ First United Methodist Church, the Lioness Club of Jamestown, the Thule Lodge, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Republican Womens Club of Chautauqua County and a former member of the Jamestown City Republican Committee. She served as an election inspector for many years and ran the Republican headquarters in Jamestown for 10 years. She is survived by two daughters: Wendy Lee Benson of Evington, Va., and Zoe D. Gustafson of Tampa, Fla.; two grandsons: John D. Benson of Staunton, Va., and Christopher A. Benson of Bluefield, Va.; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fritz E. Gustafson, who died Sept. 13, 2000; and a brother, J. Bruce Powers, who died Feb. 28, 2003. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Powers, Present & Sixbey Funeral Home. The Rev. Douglas M. Knopp, pastor of Christ First United Methodist Church, will officiate. 1922 2003 Ethel R. GUSTAFSON, 80, of 2300 Aaron St., Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of
149 Colfax St., Jamestown, died Thursday (March 6, 2003) in Florida. A
Jamestown resident for many years, and a Port Charlotte resident since 1985,
she was born June 1, 1922. She was a member of First Lutheran Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer R. Gustafson, who died Nov.
29, 1993.
Lake View Cemetery She came to America in 1923, settling in the Jamestown
area. She was a graduate of Jamestown High School and was employed by
Falconer High School for 21 years, retiring in 1988 as assistant librarian.
She was a volunteer grandma in the Jamestown schools and helped out with
Special Olympics.

Gustafson Helen M. Paulson 1917 2002 12/26/2002 - Helen M. Gustafson, 85, of 909 West Third St., died at 5:35 a.m. Sunday (Dec. 22, 2002) in WCA Hospital. She was born Jan. 4, 1917, in Jamestown, the daughter of Gottfried and Emelia Johnson Paulson. She was a 1936 graduate of Jamestown High School and was a member of its J U Sorority. She was a member of First Covenant Church and arranged flowers for the church. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star, several bowling leagues and was a charter member of the Optimisses Club. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved to bowl and sew and in earlier years loved to tend her garden. Surviving are her husband, Charles Gustafson, Jr., whom she married June 28, 1940, two daughters: Carol A. Somers of Lakewood, and Kathleen M. Gustafson of North Carolina; three grandchildren: Jennifer Linebaugh of Morganton, N.C., Ryan Somers of Bellingham, Wash. and Lara Somers of Lakewood; a great grandson; and a sister, Ethel Venman of Williamsville. She was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Anderson, and a brother, Donald Paulson. The funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. David B.
