Samuelson Raymond S.
1903 2001 6/2/2001 - Raymond S. Samuelson, 97, formerly of 428 South Ave., died at 2:35 p.m. Saturday (June 2, 2001) in the Lutheran Retirement Home. A native of Jamestown, he was born Oct. 10, 1903, the son of Frank E. and Josephine A. Jones Samuelson. He was a 1921 graduate of Jamestown High School and had been employed by Marlin Rockwell Corp. for 41 years, retiring in 1968 as chief engineer. He had been a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church for 70 years and served on the church board. He was a board member of the Lutheran Retirement Home for many years and, in earlier years, was active in the Boy Scouts as a neighborhood commissioner. He was an avid fisherman, bowler and reader and loved history. He loved to summer at his cottage at Shore Acres on Chautauqua Lake and wintered in St. Petersburg, Fla. He is survived by a son, Daryl R. Samuelson of Jamestown; two grandchildren: Dr. Stephen D. Samuelson of Overland Park, Kan., and Vickie K. Knutsen of Minneapolis, Minn.; and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lillie V. Swanson Samuelson, whom he married Aug. 25, 1927, and who died in November of 1950; his second wife, Nina Johnson Samuelson, whom he married Oct. 10, 1953, and who died Nov. 8, 1999; and a brother, Orville E. Samuelson. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Immanuel Lutheran Church. The Rev. Wesley L. Hamlin, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Lake View Cemetery. 1950 2002 4/12/2002 - A. Rowley Sandberg, 51, of Garfield Road, died Friday (April 12, 2002) in Westfield Memorial Hospital. He was born Oct. 20, 1950, in Pittsburgh, Pa., the son of H. Alan Sandberg and the late Marcia L. Rowley Sandberg. A Chautauqua County resident most of his life, he attended Falconer High School, and was employed by Jamestown Container as a machine operator from 1972 to 1997. He attended God’s Country Chapel in Clymer. Besides his father of Frewsburg, he is survived by his wife of five years, Sandra Sandberg, whom he married Feb. 11, 1997; two sons: Joshua R. Hattaway of Sinclairville and Jonathan R. Sandberg of Jamestown; four brothers: C. James, M. Chris and J. Scott Sandberg, all of Jamestown, and D. Stacy Sandberg of Sinclairville; and his stepmother, Lois Sandberg of Frewsburg. Besides his mother, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Harry E. and Ethel M. Sanders Doris R. Eckert 1928 2003 Doris R.(ECKERT) SANDERS, 74, formerly of 815 Prendergast Ave., died at
6:35 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 23, 2003) in Heritage Park Health Care Center. She
was born Jan. 31, 1928, in Jamestown, the daughter of George and Ruby
Johnson Eckert.
She was a 1946 graduate of Panama High School. Prior to retiring, she was
employed at the former Firch's Bakery in Jamestown. She is survived by a
daughter, Lillian E. Babcock of Jamestown; a son, William G. Sanders of
Sherman; four grandchildren: two great-grandchildren; two sisters: Delores
Carlson of Niobe and Joan Eckert of Watts Flats; and a brother, George
Eckert of New Jersey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert J. Sanders, whom she
married May 18, 1947, and who died Sept. 5, 1997

Obituary: Carl F. Sanford, 83, a former mayor of Jamestown, died Wednesday (June 7, 1995) in WCA Hospital. He had been stricken the day before while attending a service club meeting. Elected to the City Council in 1949, Sanford ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 1953 but defeated incumbent Samuel A. Stroth in 1955 and served through 1961, when he lost to William Whitehead. Serving during a period of non-partisan government, Sanford ran as head of the Greater Jamestown Party ticket. He ran again as a Republican in 1981 and was defeated by incumbent Democrat Steven A.Carlson. In 1962, Sanford became city manager of Elmira. He served in that post until 1968, when he became Schenectady County manager. He retired in 1977 and returned to Jamestown.
While he was mayor, Sanford served as vice president of the New York State Conference of Mayors. He also was president of the state Municipal Electric Utilities Association.Born and educated in Jamestown, he graduated from the Traffic Institute at Northwestern University in 1943. He was a member of the Jamestown Police Department for eight years and later worked as safety supervisor for Jamestown Mutual Insurance Co. Sanford was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ and was affiliated with Jamestown Consistory, Mount Moriah Lodge of Masons, Jamestown Shrine Club, Ismailia Temple of Buffalo and the Vikings Lodge. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in First Congregational Church, 316 E. Fourth St. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

ay (Jan. 24, 2003) in WCA Hospital. She was born April 19, 1967, in
Jamestown, the daughter of Kenlyn T. and Barbara Spencer Jenner of
Jamestown.
A 1985 graduate of Jamestown High School, she was currently a student at
Jamestown Community College. She had worked as a waitress in several
Jamestown-area restaurants.
She was a loving, caring person who enjoyed spending time with her children.
Besides her parents, she is survived by her husband, James E. Scalf, whom
she married Sept. 2, 1989, in Jamestown; two sons: James T. and Kenlyn S.S.
Scalf, both of Jamestown; a brother, David L. Flasher of Jamestown; a
step-brother, Kevin Peer, and a step-sister, Jodell Herrera, both of Elmira.

Scheira Barbara M. Mays 1949 2003 Barbara M. Scheira, 54, of 18 Connecticut Ave., died at 5:53 p.m. Wednesday (July 30, 2003) in WCA Hospital. A native of Jamestown, she was born March 7, 1949, the daughter of Jane Button Mays of Jamestown and the late William M. Mays. She was the wife of Peter R. Scheira, whom she married March 21, 1970. She was a 1967 graduate of Jamestown High School, and a 1968 graduate from Bryant and Stratton Business Institute. She was the director of music and organist at Bemus Point United Methodist Church for two years, Westminster Presbyterian Church for two years, Falconer United Methodist Church for two years and the former Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church for many years. She was also a private piano teacher for many years. She was a member of Bemus Point United Methodist Church, the American Guild of Organists and the Junior Board at Marvin Community House. She was a loving daughter, wife, mother and friend. She enjoyed teaching children piano and was devoted to the music at church. Her family will remember her most for her faith in Jesus Christ and a home filled with love. Besides her husband and her mother, she is survived by two sons: Scott M. and Peter M. Scheira, both of Jamestown; and two daughters: Jeanne C. Scheira of Bemus Point, and Julie E. Scheira of Jamestown. She was preceded in death by her father, who died Aug. 25, 1982. A celebration of worship and music will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Bemus Point United Methodist Church. The Rev. Daniel G. McBride, pastor, will officiate. She was born Oct. 24, 1903, in Auburn, N.Y., a daughter of Herbert and Caroline Merritt Fries. She was a 1921 graduate of Auburn High School and a 1924 graduate of Crouse-Irving Hospital School of Nursing, Syracuse. She had been employed by Veteran’s Hospital, Tupper Lake, N.Y., and WCA Hospital as a registered nurse. >From 1949 until her retirement in 1972 she was employed by Southwestern Central School district as a school nurse for Lakewood Elementary School. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Marvin Community House, Graduate Nurses Association, Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club. Her other memberships include: Southwestern Central School Retired Teachers Association, Chautauqua County Retired Teachers Association, New York Public School Nurses Association and the Crouse-Irving Hospital Alumni Association. She is survived by a son, John Barrows of San Anselmo, Calif.; two granddaughters: Sally Barrows of Washington and Ann Barrows of Berkeley, Calif.; and two great-granddaughters. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Levi Barrows, whom she married in 1928 and who died in 1939; her second husband, Arthur Schobeck, whom she married in 1962 and who died in 1962; a sister Emma Clark; and three brothers: Elmer, George and Harold Fries. Schwartz, 73, of Hidden Valley Campground, Kiantone and 9525 SE 173rd Lane, Summerfield, Fla., formerly of 126 Valleyview Ave., Jamestown, died at 12:01 p.m. Tuesday (May 21, 2002) in the WCA Hospital. A native of Jamestown, he was born April 19, 1929, the son of Gustav F. and Elsie E. Schuster Schwartz. He was a sales representative at Premium Tool and Die, where he was employed for more than 25 years, retiring in 1987. He was a 1948 graduate of Jamestown High School and a 1950 graduate from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving as an MP during the Korean War, from Jan. 17, 1951, until his discharge Dec. 30, 1952. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Lakewood Rod and Gun Club, Thule Lodge and the Viking Lodge, where he was active in the male chorus. He is survived by a daughter, Pamela May Bjorek of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, Richard L. Schwartz of Charlotte; and a brother, Richard A. Schwartz of Frewsburg. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sonya L. Aronson Schwartz, whom he married June 26, 1954, and who died Aug. 4, 1998. Mary F. Crowl SEAGO, 69, of 3017 Garfield Road, died at 12:15 p.m. Friday (October 10, 2003) in her home. An area resident most of her life, she was born Sept. 5, 1934 in Ryan, Okla., the daughter of Merrell and Florence Wright Cain.
She is survived by a daughter, Lisa Huddleson of Ashville, three sons; Robert A. Jr., Merrell D., and Steven D. Crowl, all of Jamestown; 14 grandchildren, a great-granddaughter; a sister, Betty Arendse of Mt. Vernon, Wash., and two brothers: Robert Cain of England and James France of Greensburg, Pa. She was preceded in death by 2 sons: Dennis M. Crowl, who died July 3, 1981 and Bruce M. Crowl, who died April 29, 1990; and an infant brother, Merrell Dean Cain. Sears, 76, of Manor Oak Skilled Nursing Facility, formerly of 413 Park St., Jamestown, died at 10:30 a.m. Friday (Dec. 19, 1980) in Manor Oak Skilled Nursing Facility. He was a farmer in Cassadaga for many years, and for 22 years was a self-employed painter, retiring in 1972. A lifelong area resident, Sears was born July 18, 1904 in Frewsburg, the son of William and Minnie Sears. He was a member of Kidder Memorial United Methodist Church, and was a life member of Cassadaga Odd Fellows. Surviving are his wife, the former Leone Becker, whom he married Feb. 22, 1958; a step daughter, Mrs. Jerry Ramaekers of Bemus Point; six step grandchildren, Donald Johnson of Frewsburg, Steven Ramaekers of Jamestown, Greg Ramaekers of Celoron, James, Timothy and Randall Ramaekers, all of Bemus Point; two step great-grandchildren; three brothers, Lynn Sears of Akeley, Pa., Earl Sears of Jamestown and Howard Sears of Hornell, and a sister, Alice Sears of Jamestown. He was preceded by two step sons, Floyd Johnson, who died in 1976, and Robert Johnson, who died in 1977.A private funeral will be held at the convenience of the family. 1929 2001 7/13/2001 - Henry E. ‘‘Hank’’ Seekings, 72, of 68 Falconer St., died at 7:33 p.m. Friday (July 13, 2001) in WCA Hospital. A lifelong area resident, he was born May 13, 1929, in Ellery Center, the son of the late Earl and Pansy Person Seekings. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the Korean War. He was employed by Proto Tool for 33 years, retiring in 1982. He also drove for various taxi cab companies in the Jamestown area for many years. He was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aero Space Workers Union and served as president for many years. He was a former member of the Samuel Derby Post 556 American Legion and was an avid bowler, bowling in many leagues in the area. Surviving are his wife, Betty Morrison Seekings, whom he married May 23, 1953, in Jamestown; three daughters: LouAnn Smith of Wattsburg, Pa., Brenda Nazario and Donna Lee, both of Jamestown; a son, Steven Seekings of Rome, N.Y.; five grandchildren: Aaron Lee, Edgar Nazario II, Steven, Henry and Jason Seekings, all of Jamestown; and a sister, Arlene Colburn of Hidden Valley Camp Grounds. Shaw Violet Short 1877 1950 P.J. Nov. 10, 1950: Mrs. Violet SHAW, 73, of Route 3, Jamestown, widow of Allen Shaw, died in the Forest Avenue Nursing Home at 8:30 p.m. Sunday after being a patient there, for the past two weeks. She was born Aug. 24, 1877 in Canada, and came to this country in 1909.
Mrs. Shaw was a member of the Pearl City Lodge and the Evangelical United Brethren Church at Stillwater.Surviving are four daughter, Mrs. Mossis Stormer and Mrs. George Siggins, both of Jamestown, Mrs. Lee Fairbanks of Kennedy, and Mrs. Harry Ferrera of Elmira; a brother, Frank Short of Jamestown, 21 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. A brother, Fred J. Short, died last January 25.The body is at the Boyd Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Rev. Dwight l. Steiner will officiate. Shay Gladys E. Johnson 1915 2001 6/24/2001 - Gladys E. Shay, 85, of Manor Oak Life Center, died Sunday (June 24, 2001) in the center. A lifelong area resident, she was born Aug. 28, 1915, in Jamestown, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Johnson. She had been employed by the former Bigelow’s Department Store as a sales clerk and was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. She is survived by four grandchildren: Jamie Carder of Falconer, Randall and Jason Dustin, both of Jamestown, and Michael Vetter of San Francisco; and a great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Shay, whom she married Sept. 1, 1935, and who died Dec. 9, 1979; a son, John Duane Shay, who died in 1935; and two daughters: Sherry Vetter in 1993 and Wendy Dustin in 1998. 1881 1945 P.J. July 28, 1945: Arthur Shears, 64, former Jamestown resident, died at Dewittville at 8:30 a.m. Thursday. He was a member of Local 108, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Funeral services were held this afternoon at the Garrity Funeral Home, with Rev. A. J. Powell of the Church of God Tabernacle officiating. The bearers, all members of Local 106, were Allen Webeck, Marvin Ahlstrand, Torwald Pihl, Ray A. Anderson, William McLean and David E. Willets. Interment was in Lake View Cemetery. Smith Doris Gray Farmer 1937 2002 12/4/2002 - Doris Gray Farmer-Smith, 65, of 111/2 Crescent St., formerly of Newark, N.J., and Long Island, died at 7:15 a.m. Monday (Dec. 2, 2002) in WCA Hospital. She was born March 6, 1937, in Wilson, N.C., the daughter of Deacon Elijah and the Rev. Nancy McNeil Farmer. A Jamestown resident since 1988, she was educated in the Wilson Public School System, and was employed as a production worker in the recording industry. She was a member of the North Main Street Church of God. She will be remembered for her excellent cooking and sewing abilities. She was a very giving person who was always willing and anxious to lend a generous helping hand to anyone in need. She is survived by three sons: Joseph H. Farmer and Leonard D. Smith, both of Jamestown and Alfred ''Dean'' Farmer of Yonkers; five daughters: Georgette Farmer of Brooklyn, Darlene Farmer of Queens and Jeanette Farmer, Meretta Smith and Josette Rahim, all of Jamestown; 14 grandchildren; a brother, Joe Louis Farmer of Yonkers; and a sister, Beatrice Manley of Bay Shore, N.Y. Smith Lois W. Wicklund 1914 2001 4/8/2001 - Lois W. Smith, 86, of 110 Howard St., formerly of 30 Grant St., died at 11:06 p.m. Sunday (April 8, 2001) in WCA Hospital. A native of Jamestown, she was born May 9, 1914, the daughter of Charles and Anna Liedblad Wicklund. She was a 1932 graduate of Jamestown High School and attended Alfred University Extension for two years. She was employed by Truck Lite for eight years and was the employment manager for the Manufacturers Association of the Jamestown Area for 13 years. She was a member of Westminter Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Solas Group. She was one of the original employees at Truck Lite. She enjoyed playing basketball in high school and had the priviledge of playing against Lucille Ball. She also loved to play golf and cross country skiing well into her 80’s. She is survived by a son, Donald P. Smith of Los Angeles, and a brother, Philip Wicklund of Bemus Point. She was preceded in death by a sister, Eunice Marie Wicklund, who died in 1930. She was born Sept. 14, 1913, in the town of Carroll, the daughter of John A. and Elva Wasberg Warn. She was the widow of James O. Smith, whom she married Nov. 26, 1947, and who died June 2, 1975. She was associated with her husband at the East End Hotel from 1954 until her retirement in 1970. She was a member of the former Brooklyn Heights United Methodist Church, where she was active in the adult Sunday school class, a choir member, the 50 Plus Group and formerly on the administrative board. She was also a member of the American Association of Retired Persons. She is survived by a son, Kenneth Schroeder Jr. of Clarence; four grandchildren: Siri Taylor of Colorado Springs, Colo., William Solem Jr. of Glen Burnie, Md., Elizabeth Wooten of Cheektowaga and Cynthia Tabaczynski of Clarence; and 13 great-grandchildren. 1922 2002 5/17/2002 - Peter J. Smith, 80, of 315 East Sixth St., died at 6:47 p.m. Friday (May 17, 2002) in Hamot Medical Center, Erie. He was born Feb. 4, 1922, in St. Cloud, Minn., the son of Murray N. and Lucille Grant Smith. He was a graduate of South Park High School in Buffalo, and was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II, having served in Guadalcanal, New Zealand and New Guinea. Before retiring, he had been employed as a switchman for 35 years by ALLTEL Corp. and its predecessor companies, Mid-Continent Telephone Co. and the Jamestown Telephone Company. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where he had served as a deacon and a church officer. Always a friendly person, he will be remembered as one who looked out for and assisted his neighbors, particularly the elderly. In later years he was a familiar figure outside of his home on East Sixth Street, where he enjoyed greeting his friends and neighbors as they passed by. He is survived by his wife, the former Joan Bastian, whom he married Sept. 15, 1984, in Falconer; a son, Robert M. Smith of Bryn Mawr, Pa.; a daughter, Susan L. 1944 2004 2/25/2004 - SINCLAIRVILLE - Robert D. Snow, 59, of Manor Oak Life Center, formerly of Sinclairville, died Monday (Feb. 23, 2004) in the facility. He was born March 30, 1944, in Olean, the son of the late Robert D. Snow and Cora McIntyre Snow Grundstrom. A Chautauqua County resident most of his life, he attended Cassadaga Valley Central School, earned his general equivalency degree in 1971 and attended Jamestown Community College. He had been employed by A.M.S.C.O Excel of Jamestown as a machine operator, an industrial engineer and retired as foreman in 1990 due to illness. He had been a member of the Sinclairville volunteer fire department since 1971 and served as a Boys Scout leader. He enjoyed woodworking. He is survived by a son, Timothy S. Snow of Frewsburg; two daughters: Michele D. Sundeen of Albany and Susan M. Ewing of Denton, Texas; a brother, Thomas Snow of Ashville; and a sister, Carol Hebner of Sinclairville. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Joan LaMar Snow, whom he married Nov. 22, 1962, and who died May 28, 1999. Snyder Carol Bailey 1904 2001 5/31/2001 - Carol Bailey Snyder, 96, formerly of 46 Chestnut St., died Thursday (May 31, 2001) in the Warren Manor. A Jamestown-area resident most of her life, she was born Nov. 26, 1904, in Bradford, the daughter of Benjamin M. and May Andrews Bailey. She was the widow of Leonard D. Snyder, whom she married June 18, 1928, and who died Dec. 26, 1967. She was a 1922 graduate of Jamestown High School and attended the Madeira School in McLean, Va. She had been employed as a receptionist for Dr. Bugbee and Dr. Crandall. She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and was active on the WCA Hospital board. She is survived by two daughters: Sylvia Snyder Sheridan of Hamburg and Carol B. Snyder of Warren; a son, Leonard M. Snyder of Pasadena, Calif.; six grandchildren: Andrew E. Sheridan and Amy Empric, both of Swanee, Ga., Mary Koby of Carlsbad, Calif., Kimberly Snyder of Austin, Texas, Lori Bruno of Spring Hill, Fla., and Benjamin Spitzer of Hamburg; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Leet of Warren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy ''Rudy'' Spencer, who died in

Stone Emily Dykeman 1915 2002 11/7/2002 - NAPLES, Fla. - Emily Dykeman Stone, 87, formerly of Lakewood, died Tuesday (Nov. 5, 2002) in her home. She was born June 5, 1915, in Brooklyn, the daughter of William and Elsie Dykeman. She was a 1936 graduate of Walnut Hill School in Natick, Mass., and a 1937 graduate of Jamestown High School. She attended Wellesley College. She was a volunteer with the WCA Auxiliary and Creche, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the Cabin, Chautauqua Lake Yacht Club and Moon Brook Country Club. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Bonita Springs, Fla. She is survived by her three daughters: Nancy Yates and Sally Weichel, both of Naples, and Susan Conant of St. Louis, Mo.; two grandchildren: Peter Schumacher of Fort Myers, Fla., and Sally Schumacher of Seattle; and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank P. ''Peter'' Stone, who died in 1972; two sisters: Marjorie Garratt and Barbara ''Petie'' Marshall; and a brother, William Dykeman. Storer Helen M. Cobb 1916 1999 Helen M. Cobb Storer, 82, of 235 Connecticut Ave., Jamestown, died Friday (June 11, 1999) in WCA Hospital. She was born Sept. 4, 1916, in Jamestown, a daughter of Clare E. and Maud Bentley Cobb.She was the widow of Alton C. Storer, whom she married February. 25, 1935, and who died Jan. 10, 1983. A member of the Jamestown High School graduating class of 1934, she lived most of her adult life in Toledo, Ohio, and Temperance, Mich., where she and her husband raised three children.
During World War II, while her husband was serving in the Marine Corps, she was a ''Rosie the Riveter'' with Spicer Axle Division of Dana Corp. in Toledo. In later years, she was employed by Mason's Department Store in Toledo, retiring in 1972. She was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church, the 100 Member Club of Jamestown High School and the Westside Women's Club. She loved traveling, especially in the western United States. She was an avid reader and enjoyed travel videos.
Surviving are a daughter, Claire Nofsinger of Marietta, Ga.; two sons, Allen E. Storer of Garland, Texas, and James M. Storer of Knoxville, Tenn.; five grandchildren, Kimberly Hunter and Sandra Trevino, both of Irving, Texas, Stacy Nofsinger of Greensboro, NC, Eric C. Nofsinger of Marietta, Ga., and James M. Storer Jr. of Toledo; three step grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Roland E. Cobb of Jamestown. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Jeanette C. Bailey, who died Jan. 26, 1984. The funeral will be held at 1 P.M. Monday in Powers, Present and Sixbey Funeral Home. Rev. Richard Ross, pastor of Westminster Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Strunk William

William "Frank" Strunk, one of the best known residents of this vicinity, died last evening at 7 o'clock at the home on the East Lake Road, aged 99 years. He was born in the Town of Ellicott in a log cabin, built by his grandfather, Jacob strunk in 1816. He was born May 7, 1840. He lived in the home in which he died for a period of about seventy years. He was the last member of the William Strunk family. On July 3, 1868 he married Edna Parker in the Town of Ellicott. To this union two children were born, Mrs. Grace Bender, and Mrs. Minnie Holenbeck. Mrs. Strunk died November 16, 1881. On July 29, 1884, he married Gertrude Carter of Randolph, who died eight years later. Mr. Strunk was a member of Union Grange for many years. He is survived by two grandchildren, F. Parker Hollenbeck of Ellicott and Mrs. Chester Merchant of Jamestown; three great grandchildren, Harriett, Clifton and Charles Merchant all of Jamestown and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from the Henderson-Lincoln Funeral Home. Interment will be in Lake View Cemetery.

Suckow, 75, of 92 Highland Ave., active in Masonic circles and firemen's organizations, died at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday (April 7, 1964) in Jamestown General Hospital.Mr. Suckow was born in Buffalo, May 23, 1888, a son of Christopher and Sophia Messinger Suckow and was confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Buffalo. Mr. and Mrs. Suckow, the former Grace Shaver, would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this June.Besides his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Miss Virgania Suckow, Jamestown; one sister, Mrs. Florence Fischer, Buffalo; and one niece, Mrs. Cora Beaty, Buffalo. He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Lind Funeral Home. The Rev. Ernest G. Swan Arthur W.
1880 1957 Arthur W. Swan, 76, of 706 Lakeview Avenue, prominent Jamesown insurance executive and former banker, died at 6:15 p.m. Wednesday, in his home.
Mr. Swan was born April 8, 1880, in Randolph, the son of Daniel and Elizabeth White Swan. He came to Jamestown from Randolph 46 years ago, and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church here. He attended Chamberlain Institute, Randolph. A charter member of the Jamestown Rotary Club, he was a former treasurer of the Sportsmen's Club and a former member of Jamestown Consistory. He was also a past master of Mt. Moriah Lodge, No. 145, F.and A.M., serving iin that capacity in 1918. He was married to the former Sadie Loucks on Oct. 4, 1906, in Jamestown by the Presbyterian minister, Rev. Otis Smith. He served on the War Ration Board during World War II. Mr. Smith was well known for his active interest and unusual ability in sports, especially baseball and basketball. He had been an avid follower of PONY League games.
He formed the Swan-Rowley Insurance Company with C. Lynn Rowley in 1933. He had also been a vice president of Chauauqua National Bank.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sadie Loucks Swan; a son Daniel A. Swan, Jamestown; two grandchildren, Judith A Swan and Stephen Swan of Jamestown, both of Jamestown; a niece, Mrs. Grace Wrench, Los Angeles, Calif., three nephews, Robert Sackett, Lockport, Edward Parker, Brownsville, Tex; and Eugene Loucks, Deerfield Beach, Fla., and a sister-in-law, Mrs Lillian L. Parker, Jamestown.
Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Friday from the Henderson-Lincoln Chapel. Rev. Gilbert F. vanBever, minister of First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Swan Elizabeth Mitchell 1941 2003 Elizabeth Mitchell Swan, 61, of 108 William St., died at 11:20 p.m. Saturday (Aug. 9, 2003) in her home.
A lifelong area resident, she was born Dec. 12, 1941, in Baltimore, the daughter of the late Joseph B. and Evelyn Sandbloom Mitchell. She was a 1960 graduate of Jamestown High School and was a member of First Covenant Church. She had been employed at Quality Markets and previously worked as a medical receptionist for Dr. Trevor Woodward. Along with her sister, Elizabeth was awarded the caregiver of the year award in 1996 by Hospice of Chautauqua County. She is survived by her husband, Ronald H. Swan; three sons: Timothy R. and Tage M. Swan, both of Jamestown, and Todd C. Swan of Mebane, N.C.; a grandson, Garrett M. Swan of Jamestown; and a sister, Kristina M. Olmstead of Flowery Branch, Ga. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, Gust and Jennie Sandbloom. A private family service was held Tuesday in the Lind Funeral Home. 1937 2003 Bruce Clifford Swanson, 66, of 98 Camp St., died at 3:38 p.m. Wednesday (Dec. 3, 2003) in his home. A native of Jamestown, he was born July 17, 1937, the son of the late Clifford and Dagmar Neilson Swanson. He was a 1955 graduate of Jamestown High School, active in the Alpha Ki Sigma Fraternity and served in the National Guard. He was the national sales manager at American Locker, where he was employed for 18 years, retiring in 1991. He was also a member of the Vikings Lodge, the Allen Park Men's Club, the YMCA Men's Club, the War Vets Recreation, was a volunteer with YMCA and Camp Onyahsa, and a swim official at Jamestown High School and YMCA. He is survived by a daughter, Lauren Ann Swanson of St. Cloud, Fla.; three sons: Stephen Bruce Swanson of Lake George, N.Y., Barry Keith Swanson of Claymont, Del., and Robert Allen Swanson of Canton, Ohio; and seven grandchildren: Ingrid Swanson of Lake George, Erik and Kara Swanson of Claymont, Jessica, Casey and Olivia Swanson, all of Canton, and Morgan Swanson of St. Cloud. Swanson, Jr., 76, of 602 Jefferson St., formerly of Jamestown died Thursday (May 16, 2002) in the East Liverpool Community Hospital, East Liverpool, Ohio. He was born May 2, 1926, in Jamestown, the son of Raymond and Genevieve Carlson Swanson Sr. He was a graduate of Bemus Point High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II having served in the Pacific Theatre on the USS Solomons Aircraft carrier. He had been employed for many years at the Carborundum Corps retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Chester American Legion Post 121, Chester, W. Va., the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 66, East Liverpool, and the East Liverpool Moose Lodge. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Kimball Swanson, whom he married Aug. 28, 1975; four sons: Gary Swanson of Los Angles, Douglas Swanson and Daniel Shanahan, both of Jamestown, and James Shanahan of Kennedy; 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. The funeral service will be held at 1 pm Tuesday in the Falconer Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Lake View Cemetery. A resident of the United States and Jamestown since 1919, she was born March 4, 1905, in Bohuslan, Sweden, the daughter of Carl G. and Anna G. Mattson Carlson. She was the widow of Vern J. Swanson, whom she married June 29, 1929, and who died Feb. 24, 1969. She is survived by a daughter, Norma L. Arvidson of Jamestown, with whom she made her home; two grandchildren: Tamera L. Samuelson and Tore V. Arvidson, both of Jamestown; and five great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers: Gust and Fritz Carlson; and five sisters: Hilma Turpyn, Esther Norlander, Hilga Nelson, Vera Swanson and Hedvig Hjarpe. 1947 2003 LAKEWOOD - Linda Ann Sykes, 55, of 107 Waldemere Way, died at 2:40 a.m. Friday (May 16, 2003) in WCA Hospital. She was born Nov. 20, 1947, in Jamestown, the daughter of Elaine Freeburg Sykes and the late James Sykes. She was a 1965 graduate of Southwestern High School, attended West Virginia University and graduated in 1969 from State College at Fredonia. She completed some graduate work. She was employed as a sales clerk by the Bon-Ton and, in earlier years, was employed by Blue Cross & Blue Shield in Washington. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the fine arts, painting and needle work. Besides her mother of Lakewood, she is survived by a brother, Gregory James Sykes of Lakeland, Fla. She was preceded in death her father on April 5, 1993. A private family memorial service will be held in Hubert Funeral Home. The Rev. Msgr. Joseph M.
